"Would You Kindly?"
This iconic phrase and others from the game have become staples in our speech. I can't count the times I have asked for a favor using "would you kindly?" While the first game has been out for years, the language of BioShock has a lasting impact. It's still difficult not to get goosebumps when Andrew Ryan proclaims "a man chooses, a slave obeys." Don't forget the Circus of Values' sillier, often used phrases like "come back when you get some money, buddy!"
Cosplay
To me, cosplay is the ultimate form of flattery. It takes months of time and effort to construct the perfect costume. I am involved in the early phases of planning BioShock cosplay with a group of gamers. My husband has the build to pull off a Big Sister. I will be a Little Sister. Others are becoming Big Daddies or splicers. Fans also have a love for BioShock's 1950s fashion, including a steampunk style.
Philosophy of Ayn Rand
Whether or not gamers agree with Ayn Rand, it's impossible to deny the influence of "Atlas Shrugged" in BioShock. That influence has got me and many other gamers to pick up the book just to compare it to BioShock. While I disagree with how Andrew Ryan ran Rapture, I also disagree with Sophia Lamb's approach in the sequel. The BioShock universe makes you question everything from politics, scientific innovations, to philosophy. My friends and I have enjoyed conversations regarding the politics of BioShock and I look forward to more.
"Beyond the Sea"
Most of what I listen to is from video games and both BioShocks have amazing soundtracks. Instead of today's popular music, many gamers I know have fallen in love with older tunes. This influence not only includes the BioShock soundtracks, but all music from that era. I am grateful to games like BioShock for exposing me to songs I wouldn't have otherwise heard.
BioShock has shaped gaming culture and my own life in numerous ways. From the moment the plane crashed and we swam to the lighthouse, nothing was ever the same again.
