Bird Brain Joins Widespread Recall of Pourable Gel Fuel Due to Flash Fire and Burn Hazards
Pourable Gel Fuels Recalled
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has warned the public about a widespread recall involving pourable gel fuel that begin in June 2011 due to an investigation into burn incidents related to use of the products. On October 5, 2011, the Ypsilanti, Michigan company, Bird Brain, Inc., joined the CPSC with a joint announcement they would recall approximately 1.6 million bottles and cans of their pourable gel fuel. Bird Brain's recall involves multiple products including the following: Bird Brain Firepot Fuel Gel; Bird Brain Firepot Citronella Fuel Gel and Bird Brain BioFuel Fuel Gel. Gel fuel packets in sizes of 16 ounce bottles, 32 ounce bottles and 64 ounce bottles are included in the recall. Both pourable fuel gels with or without citronella.
According to the CPSC there have been 20 incidents reported to Bird Brain inc, regarding incidents; 11 of which involved first, second and third degree burns. Bird Brain pourable fuel gel products have been distributed through major retailers such as Sears, K-Mart and Target as well as online sites such as Amazon.com, Target.com and Buy.com. The recall and hazards associated with pourable fuel gels has become so widespread that the CPSC has asked for consumers to stop using all pourable gel fuels together.
The CPSC warns that pourable gel fuel can unexpectedly ignite causing serious burns and fire hazards. Those using pourable gel fuels are advised to stop using the products and return the unused portion to the company for a full refund.
