Bird Watching in New York City

Bird watching is possible no matter where you live - even in the most urban areas of NYC. If you live in New York or are planning on visiting, the parks are some of the best places for bird watching, especially in the early morning and late evening.

Central Park, for example, is arguably the most famous area of NYC, and is home to dozens of bird species that you might not find many other places. Wood ducks, bald eagles, whip-poor-wills, barn swallows and marsh wrens are just a few of the amazing creatures you'll find in this enormous area of New York. The great egret is most commonly found in the spring and early fall, and you'll see American coots starting in early January.

Or, you can head over to the Breezy Point Peninsula in Queens. This highly ecologically-minded area of the city is one of the most diverse breeding grounds for dozens of different birds, according to the United States Fish and Wildlife Service. The piping plover, for instance, is currently considered "threatened" in the United States, but is common in Breezy Point.

Prospect Park is another famous bird watching area of NYC, and has even been named an Important Birding Area in New York by the National Audubon Society, according to ProspectPark.org. You'll find many rare species of bird in this park, including the scarlet tanager, the green heron and the American bittern. Just make sure you bring binoculars, because many of this area's birds are most comfortable in roosts high up in the trees.
