Birmingham to consider expanding bistros

Mark Vansetti
In 2007, Birmingham officials discussed the idea of allowing bistros in certain areas of the city. The plan was to allow small restaurants to serve liquor outdoors, perhaps along a sidewalk. Originally, the City Commission decided to allow bistros, but only in the Downtown and Triangle Districts. The Mixed-Use District was excluded.

Recently, an entrepreneur has asked the commission to modify its decision from three years ago to allow bistros in the Mixed-Use District. Specifically, the entrepreneur hopes to open a small neighborhood bistro serving Italian food on Cole Street, east of Woodward and across from the Downtown District.

The Planning Commission has discussed the issue and indicated its support for the modification. The City Commission will soon discuss the change at a joint meeting.
