The Birmingham Education Foundation (BEF) holds an annual fund campaign that offers ways for parents and students to do more through a giving frame of mind. And, in that same vein, while many appreciate the efforts of teachers, coaches and others associated with educating a community, the BEF offers a way for them to do just that charitably.

The organization's mission is to assess those projects together with the school district that enhance student learning and that can't be funded without private support. Curriculum areas for that are the arts, to encourage a student's unique creative vision; academics, to assist in students reaching full potential at all achievement levels; athletics, to support fitness programs that promote a healthy lifestyle; and technology, to invest in advancements that impact the classroom and learning for all pupils.

Donations can be made in the name of a favorite educator or other mentor, to make their legacy a continuing way to honor them and the community.

The Birmingham Public Schools' website shares this quote from just such a donor parent: "While I frequently tell teachers directly that I appreciate their hard work and competency, being able to honor them in this way, and accomplish so much at once is gratifying. I hope that others will think of honoring excellent teachers through BEF."
