Outsiders often think of Michigan as a gritty, grimy industrial state, but The Mitten offers some of the nation's finest agriculture as well.

Visitors to the Birmingham Farmers Market this fall, open from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sundays at 666 North Old Woodward, will see some of the evidence.

Farmers market enthusiasts describe Birmingham's market as small and friendly, yet with a diverse offering of produce and flora.

The website agclassroom.org notes that agriculture is Michigan's second-largest industry. Production of tart cherries leads the nation. Cucumbers, squash, beans, carrots, celery and plums place second. Asparagus (yuk?) is third. For floral enthusiasts, geranium and petunia production rates second, and overall production of "floriculture products" is fifth.

Floriculture products? This really is an ag classroom!

Don't wait too late to visit the Birmingham Farmers Market. The season's last Sunday is Oct. 24.
