According to a study cited on citizensreport.org, 64 million Americans have completed a program to learn cardiopulmonary resuscitation, best known as CPR, to provide first aid for someone who has just suffered cardiac arrest. That's only 21 percent.

"CPR for Family and Friends" is a free course offered by the Birmingham Fire Department on the second Wednesday of each month, which means the next opportunities are at 7 p.m. on Nov. 10 and on Dec. 8. The convenient location is the Adams Fire Station at 572 S. Adams.

Fire officials say people feel more positively, and are less intimidated, when they are joined by a spouse, another relative or a friend, and that children also can learn the technique. Participants will receive certificates of completion.

In addition to CPR, participants also will learn how to help somebody who is choking through use of the so-called Heimlich Maneuver, and parents can gain knowledge for prevention of sudden infant death syndrome.

Registration is limited to 20 people per month. To sign up, call the Birmingham Fire Department, (248) 530-1900.
