Not long ago, a new radio communication system was installed in Birmingham. The new system was intended to create better communications among public safety entities in Oakland County, but the Birmingham Fire Department is experiencing some difficulties. Basically, the system is not sufficient for daily Fire Department operations because of its unreliability.

The problem stems from a decision by the City Commission in 2004 to put the system's radio antenna at Lincoln Hills Golf Course instead of on top of City Hall. The engineering study had recommended City Hall, but the commission decided to put it else where when they found out that the antenna was almost 200 feet tall and would be attached to a 10 feet by 12 feet support building.

The plan is to put a smaller antenna on top of City Hall, which should improve communications within a mile of the site. Installation should take place in about 7 weeks.
