Birmingham kids can beat the heat this weekend by reading

Library's summer reading program starts on an 89-degree Friday

Weather forecasts for Friday, June 18, in Birmingham indicate that this week's heretofore seasonable temperatures will rise to a sticky 89 degrees.

Parents and caregivers with small children and adolescents may feel their first taste of summer vacation. The kids will say it's too hot to go outside. Fine: Haul them to Birmingham's Baldwin Public Library at 300 W. Merrill St. between 1 p.m. and 5 p.m. There's an open house and sign-up for the 2010 summer reading program, which will give the kids something to do indoors in the air conditioning.

Temps on Saturday, June 19, may rise even a degree or two higher, and there's a chance of clouds. For more indoor (and educational) activity, the displays at the Birmingham Bloomfield Art Center, 1516 S. Cranbrook Road, include regional high school art competition.

Afternoon high temperatures from Monday, June 20, into midweek should drop to near the middle 80s, with spotty showers and thunderstorms each day.
