Sports at Birmingham schools were not organized until 1920. By 1925 a Board in Control of Athletics had been formed and soon baseball, football, basketball, track, tennis, golf, and swimming were included in intramural programs at the schools.

The Birmingham Historical Museum & Park will be running an exhibit, "Sporting the B: Early Birmingham Athletics," which will display this history and more. The exhibit will run from October 16 to January 8, 2011. It will feature artifacts and photos for residents to learn about the history of local Birmingham athletes and teams.

The Museum & Park was established in 2001 and is located at 556 W. Maple Road. The exhibit can be seen from Wednesday to Saturday, 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. For more information, cal the museum at 248-530-1928.
