Birmingham police update

Mark Vansetti
Birmingham is home to 1,267 parking meters, which are enforced 12 hours per day, Monday through Saturday. Of course, there are other places in which a ticket may be issued, as well, such as parking too close to a fire hydrant or in a spot reserved for handicapped persons. Currently, under Michigan law, the court is required to notify the Secretary of State when six or more regular parking citations or violation notices have been issued and are unpaid. The court will do the same when two or more tickets are issued for parking in handicap-reserved spots.

A bill recently passed by the Michigan House of Representatives, however, will lower that number of regular parking citations from six to three. If the bill passes the Senate and is signed into law, the court will notify the Secretary of State once a person has just three unpaid parking tickets. The Secretary of State will be forbidden from issuing a driver's license or renewing a license before the person with the unpaid tickets pays a $45 driver license clearance fee and pays up on their unpaid parking tickets.
