Birth of a Poem

Kay Raisy
Words tumble
Grappling with each other
As if twisted on the tongue
Trying to unfurl thoughts yet unclear

They cry out
Begging to be released, listen!
They whisper their names while you sleep
No, they are not ready to be shared

Wailing, oh
The terrible throes of grief
Wanting only to show their proof
Finally praying, pleading with God

Then, with grace
Words fall into their places
Feelings find adjectives suffice
Empathy finds its place among them

With new strength
Collectively they stand to fight
Breaking the bars that held them
Leaving them in ruin at their feet

Rejoicing
They dance past velvet curtains
Radiant, preening with pride
Curtains drop and the fanfare begins

    "They cry out
    Begging to be released, listen!"

    - Seems to happen to me a lot and I'm not able to sleep. I end up staying up all night with pen and paper in hand! Good to know it's not just me!

Very good. this does describe the birth of piece of writing. Sometimes they are created with turmoil like this, at others times the words gently fall into place.

"They whisper their names while you sleep"

I can relate to all of it ,especially the line above-not often but vividly when it happens.
