Birthday Party Games

Three Inexpensive Games

Cassie Mae
The party date is planned, the cake is ordered, and now it is time to think of a few birthday party games for the kid's to play.

First, if you have chosen a theme use the vintage game "Pin the Tail on the Donkey" only change the donkey to your main theme. For my son's birthday I made "Pin the Blade on the Fan." Yes, he was obsessed with osculating fans and I ran with that theme.

What you will need: Large piece of square or rectangle paper. Scissors. Markers. Construction paper. Scotch tape. Blindfold.

1. If you are having a Spiderman theme go to a discount store such as Wal-Mart. Buy a big piece of semi-sturdy paper.

2. Draw a picture of Spiderman's head and chest on the board of paper. You don't have to be an artist. Just look at a picture of Spiderman and do the best you can. You can even draw Spiderman and have your child color him in with red marker. Outline a spider on his chest. If you are not comfortable with that or do not have time, look on the Internet and print out a picture. Use glue paste to put on board of paper.

3. Now take black construction paper and draw spiders. Make as many spiders as you will need depending on how many children will be attending.

4. Put tape on the back of your creepy black spiders.

Game Time!

1. Blind fold the child, spin three times.

2. The closest spider to Spiderman's outlined chest spider wins!

I read quite awhile ago not to give prizes for children's games at birthday parties unless all children attending get one. Or just stick with handing out a goodie bag to each child. That way no one has hurt feelings. We want all of the children to remember the birthday party as fun!

Birthday Party Game- #2.

What you will need: At least thirty balloons and a lot of air to blow them up! A timer, watch or clock.

Buy a bag of balloons.

Blow up balloons.

Put balloons on the floor of a room big enough for the children.

Game Time!

1. Depending on room and ages of children, let them sit on the balloons and pop them!

The kids had so much fun doing this. The laughter and joys of excitement were priceless. If there are smaller children take them to another room or let them go first. Time them at three to five minutes. Then let the bigger kids at the balloons. Get ready for loud shrieks! Warning! It does get pretty wild.

Outdoor Birthday Party Game- #3

Make your own piñata! My male twin boys chose "bugs" as their theme. So I made a painted ladybug piñata.

What you will need: One round balloon. Old newspapers. Water and flour. Bowl and spoon. Small can of paint (s) and/or black permanent marker. At least five days to make as you need to let it dry between steps.Sharp knife. Yarn. Rope. Bat. Blindfold.

1. Blow up round balloon.

2. Make paste by mixing equal parts of flour and water in a bowl until it feels like glue. If mixture gets too thick, add more water and vice versa.

3. Set newspapers on your table or work area to keep mess under control.

4. Shred newspaper in strips. About two inches wide and six inches in length.

5. Dip strips of newspaper in water and paste mixture fully. Press down on balloon. Do at least two layers and leave a hole open so you can stuff the goodies in later. (Caution: I did quite a few layers and the kids had a very time breaking my piñata! Even my teenage nephew had a hard time, but he did finally break it.) Let each layer dry before putting on thee next layer.

6. Let dry overnight.

7. Paint. I painted my round piñata dark red. Dry. Then with black permanent marker I put black spots, eyes, and drew wings on the ladybug. Let dry overnight.

8. Pop balloon inside with sharp knife.

9. Tip: I filled goodie bags with each child's name on it and tied it closed. That way it was fair as everyone got the same amount. The goodie bags I filled with candy and plastic glass bug houses to go with our theme. Do not put any plastic glass items in the piñata! Three of the twelve plastic houses were broken by the bat hitting the piñata. Thankfully I had extra so no one was disappointed. (The bug houses were purchased at the Dollar Tree.)

10. On top make a circle with yarn or rope so there is a loop to pull rope through later to hang pinata on a tree branch.

11. Take more flour and water mixture, newspaper strips, and seal piñata with yarn or rope enclosed.

12. Repaint edges. Dry.

Game Time!

1. Hang pinata from tree branch with rope at level where kids can reach it but while they are hitting it, you may move it around by pulling on rope if you choose.

2. Blindfold one child. Spin three times.

3. Child gets three tries with bat to break the pinata.

4. Winner breaks pinata! Watch the kids run and scramble to get to the goodies.

Enjoy making memories for your child and friends!

The moral of the piñata: all are justified through faith. Although the pinata has lost it's religious symbol.
