Birthday Party Games: Classic Games with a Twist

Lyn Lomasi
What's a birthday party without some fun games to play? Everyone knows how to play the classics and some might be bored with them. Here you will find birthday party games everybody knows, or at least they think so - these won't be played the familiar way. Enjoy some of my many variations on the classics.

Birthday Party Games: Karaoke Musical Chairs

Materials:
circle of chairs
karaoke music and microphone

Instructions:
Play just like musical chairs, except there will be a person singing karaoke, instead of music playing. The musical intervals can be a touch longer than normal to allow each person to show off their music talents (or lack thereof). The person singing will be the one eliminated from the previous round. A volunteer who will sit out or the game coordinator can be the first singer. If you don't know how to play regular musical chairs, click here for the instructions.

Birthday Party Games: Backward Limbo

Materials:
limbo stick or broomstick
something (or someone) to hold up the stick on both ends

Instructions:
Play just like traditional limbo, except for one thing. The players will be walking under the limbo stick backward. This can get pretty hilarious as people start to lose their balance. If you happen to not know how to play regular limbo, click here for instructions.

Birthday Party Games: Five-Legged Race

Materials:
enough bandanas to tie everyone's legs together in groups of 4
start and finish line
room to race

Instructions:
Separate players into groups of 4. Next tie the first person's left leg to the second person's right leg. Then, tie that person's left leg to the 3rd person's right leg. Lastly, tie the 3rd person's left leg to the 4th person's right leg. This is to be played just like "Three-Legged Race", except this is harder to control. Adults and children alike will get many laughs from this one. If you haven't played "Three-Legged" Race before and need instructions, click here.

Birthday Party Games: Twins Potato Sack Race

Materials:
potato sacks (or something similar) large enough to fit two people
start and finish line
room to race

Instructions:
To play this game, split everyone up into groups of two. Give each group a potato sack and instruct them to get into it together. How they get in it is up to them, as long as they will both be able to jump together for the race. Play this game just like traditional potato sack race. There will likely be many falls during this one. If you've never had a potato sack race, please click here for instructions.

A great new family reunion website is www.familyreunionhelper.com. Read the blog on "Really Cool Ice Breaker Games" or download a free copy of "Human Foosball" rules and instructions.

Great ideas! My son is turning 10 on the 31st and he has a bunch of friends from school coming to his party. Some of these should keep them pretty entertained.
