To get your child excited for their party, work with them on making a pinata. The easiest way to do this is to get a giant balloon, blow it up and suspend it by a string to a yardstick between two chairs, and cover it with strips of newspaper soaked in water, flour, and a little dish soap. When it's dry, it can be painted and the balloon can be popped to make it hollow.. At the party itself, take turns blindfolding a child then having them try to break open the pinata with a baseball bat. Fill the pinata with candy or party favors.
Water balloon fight
Fill up a few laundry baskets with water balloons, set up obstacles and bunkers, and let the kids run wild. This is probably only good for during the summer months! If it's winter, try a snow ball fight instead.
Cake decorating
Let the kids decorate the birthday cake themselves with frosting and cake accessories. Everything can usually be found right next to the cake mixes in any grocery store.
Tea party
For a themed party, a group of girls might like to have a tea party. Have some secondhand dressy clothes for the girls to doll themselves up and serve tea and cookies. Stuffed animal guests can be the girls' escorts!
Animals
As children arrive, have each of them draw an animal from a hat. When everyone is there, they all have to pretend they're the animal until someone guesses what it is. The trick is that an animal can't guess, so one child will draw "zookeeper."
Donut eating contest
Suspend donuts by strings in a row. With their hands behind their backs, partygoers must eat the donut as quickly as possible. The first one finished wins.
