Birthday Party Ideas for an Alice and Wonderland Theme

Michele Arrowsmith- Rowe
With the popularity of Tim Burton's movie, "Alice and Wonderland," no wonder kids are requesting this theme for their next birthday party! The "Mad Hatter Tea Party" is fun, crazy, and "a very merry unbirthday" party that will be a perfect "match," - - even for the "Queen of Hearts!" Do you need tea party ideas? From invitations, décor, food and beverage, games, favors, and cake, I will help you get started!

First, let's discuss the color scheme! A mix of light and dark hues of pink, orange, aqua or blue, yellow, and purple will be perfect! However, a black, red, and white color scheme will work, too.

How to decorate? I suggest setting up one long table, with different sized chairs, outside, under a tree. No tree? Any setting, including indoors, will do! Set a large arm chair at the head of the table. Pick fun linen fabrics, with busy patterns and in the same hues of your chosen scheme. For example, polka dots or stripes in aqua, pink, or purple. On the table, display different bold colored teapots, stacked teacups, keys and keyholes, small pocket watches, playing cards, and rabbits. Want to add flowers? How about red roses with hearts? Add a "Cheshire Cat" piñata to the tree. Set up jumbo playing cards and pink flamingo lawn ornaments around the yard. Want to add a rabbit hole to your design? Build a tunnel for the entrance to the party! Have someone dressed up as the rabbit, to help guide the children down the hole! Add cutouts of rabbit paw prints and place them throughout the yard. Finally, add different colored Chinese lanterns and hang them above the table to make your setting whimsical. For all your party supplies, including paper and plastic dishware, go to www.ebay.com, www.shindigz.com, and www.birthdayinabox.com.

"Don't be late for a very important date!" Yes! You don't want to be late or miss a fun party! I highly recommend the "Disney's Alice in Wonderland Birthday Invitations," made by "Made with Love Invitations." The wording and design is perfect for this theme!

Make this a costume party? Why not? Have the children come as their favorite character in the story! And then, have the children pick their favorite costume by casting their vote on a slip of paper. Place all the slips of paper in the "Mad Hatter's hat." The child with the most votes wins a prize!

Want to know what food and beverage to serve? Don't want to serve the traditional cucumber or finger sandwiches, scones with jam, petits fours, and tea? How about having a tea party with a twist? Set up a buffet table with tiered serving plates for all your goodies. Make small signs that say "Eat me" and "Drink me," and add them to the table. Serve peanut butter and jelly, ham and cheese, and turkey sandwiches, in shapes of hearts, clubs, spades, and diamonds. Substitute the scones and petits fours with brownies, cookies, pastries, and rice crispy treats. Instead of serving hot tea, how about serving warm apple cider? Finally, set up a candy station with an assortment of candy in colored pails, in the color scheme, or clear glass containers. Want a creative container for the candy? Find bottles with corks and add a tag that reads, "Eat me." Attach the tag with raffia. The children are too young for glass? Have custom candy bags premade!

Need game ideas? "Croquet anyone?" Yes, set up a fun game of Croquet in the yard. Other games that could be fun are: a game of hitting the piñata, a timed scavenger hunt, a large chess game, musical chairs, teacup toss, games with playing cards, or read them the story and have them act out their character in the story.

Need prize and favor ideas? Go to websites that were mentioned earlier. All websites have a nice selection of "Alice in Wonderland," themed favors. If you are looking for a great personalized favor, go to www.mycandybarwrappers.com. This website has great chocolate bars that read: "Off with their heads!" or "Eat me!" and the name and date of the birthday girl or boy. If it's a girl's party, "Birthday in a Box," has a cute "Tea Party Ultimate Favor Set." This box set includes: one sheet of tea set stickers, one set of white gloves, one pearl necklace, one daisy ball, one wooden brush, one body glitter, and the box the favors come in. Want favor ideas for boys? How about a Mad Hatter's hat filled with goodies!

"Let them eat cake!" Yes! The cake! A "Topsy Turvy cake," will be perfect for this celebration! My favorite cake for this theme is the "Alice and Wonderland Mad Hatter Cake," made by "For the Love of Cake." Don't want to serve cake? How about serving themed cupcakes? They are always popular!

There are many fun and creative ideas for this popular themed birthday party. From invitations, décor, food and beverages, games, favors, and cake - - I have given you ideas to help you get started. Trust me - - this party will be a perfect match for any queen!
