Bishop Arts District First Thursdays Offer Fun and Value for Families
Dallas Entertainment District is Home to Dining and Shopping

First Thursday in the Bishop Arts District began several years ago as a way to introduce locals to many of the new businesses that were springing up in the north Oak Cliff locale. Bishop Arts restaurants were popular with lunchtime crowds, thanks to its proximity to downtown, but the nightlife situation in the area was floundering. First Thursday encouraged customers to come back after lunch, have dinner, and explore the area. The concept has worked so well that most businesses now stay open late, and First Thursdays offer something special for everyone.
Restaurants participating in First Thursday offer special dishes and discounts on popular menu items. Many of the restaurants in Bishop Arts are already popular for their low prices and great food, but on First Thursday, families can truly stretch their dining dollars while visiting one of the area's many restaurants.
Retail establishments also offer discounts, and often have an "open house" type of atmosphere, sometimes offering mini-receptions with free food or drinks. Art galleries usually schedule an opening or event around this time. Many businesses participate in a "wine walk" in which visitors can purchase a Bishop Arts-branded wine glass and enjoy samples from some of the District's establishments.
Free events are sometimes held in conjunction with First Thursday, such as a recent classic car show held on the streets of Bishop Arts. The annual "Jingle Bells on Bishop" Christmas festival usually begins on First Thursday. Nearby attractions like the Texas Theater (several blocks south at Jefferson and Madison) and the X+ Arts District (less than a mile west at Davis and Tyler) also offer things to do and see.
While many of the shops and restaurants may cater to grown-ups, kids will enjoy places like Dude, Sweet Chocolate (think high-end Willy Wonka) and The Soda Gallery, while little girls will love the Cozy Cottage Children's Boutique.
The official Bishop Arts District website (www.BishopArtsDistrict.com) usually lists events scheduled during upcoming First Thursdays, and participating businesses often post their planned specials and discounts on the Bishop Arts Facebook page.
Parking can sometimes be an issue around Bishop Arts, but two large lots (one at Davis and Bishop, and the other at Seventh and Madison) are available, which will require walking a few blocks to some of the area establishments.
