Bizarre Christmas Tree Ornaments

Ornaments to Put the Weird Back in Your Christmas

Kelly Spies
As if Christmas family celebrations don't get weird enough. What, with that uncle that always wants to know the color of everyone's underwear regardless of sex or age and the sister-in-law's kids that tried to light off the fireworks they got for Christmas under the dining room table and the dog that barfed up a live tweety bird on the back patio. Well now you have the opportunity to feel superior because there are people weirder than you. Check out some of the ornaments other weird families are putting on their Christmas trees.

The 7-Foot Upside-Down Pre-Lit Christmas Tree
Sam's Club carries one of the strangest Christmas Trees I've ever seen and while this item is not necessarily an ornament it's way too bizarre to leave out of this article. After seeing a photo of the upside down Christmas tree I thought to myself, "why on earth would somebody want that?" Then it occurred to me, simply because it IS strange.

The shape of the tree when upside down supposedly allows for more presents to be place underneath and fits between chairs in corners better than your regular old every-year tree. For some reason I envision a Christmas tree chandelier.

If you're crazy enough to hang a Christmas tree upside down in your house then I guess you couldn't go wrong by purchasing it pre-lit.

Coor's Light Christmas Lights
Mmmm. Nothing says Christmas like beer lights. What? Alrighty then, I suppose everyone has the right to hang whatever ornaments they want on their Christmas tree. Even they are 15 dollar beer lights from Spencer's Gifts.

Antique Lure Assortment and Netting
Can't you just see it? Your beautifully decorated Victorian Themed Douglas Fir all lit up with clear lights, turn of the century ornaments and antique fishing lures complete with netting. Umm, no I can't. I can however, picture a redneck bachelor inviting his buddies up to his single-man's cabin for a weekend of hunting and fishing and having all twelve of these fishing lures dangling from the netting that wraps around the entire tree. (And bragging to his buddies about the size of the fish caught in that net) You can get these cool ornaments at Cabela's, the World Famous Outfitters.

Nasty Mistletoe, Dirty Talking Ornament
There are times when I can't wait for my kids to grow up so I can buy stuff like this. This is mistletoe that catcalls and talks dirty to you, and guests when they walk under it or pass by it. Nasty mistletoe comes with 8 crazy phrases like, Whooo - I'd need a lot of eggnog to go home with you!, Mmmm, check out those ornaments! And You can't play with that until Christmas. If you live in Connecticut you can find this bizarre ornament at S&S Worldwide on Mill Street or by calling their toll free number 1-800-288-9941.

Legend of the Christmas Pickle
Excited to hear about this one already, aren't you?

Apparently there is some way out there, wacky German tradition that coincides with pickles. Sort of like a German Christmas Pickle Hunt where little German children rush around and around the tree in search of the pickle. The little German kid that finds it first gets a special blessing. How lousy is that for a Christmas tradition?

Lousy enough for Germans to bring it with them to America and thus we have the glass pickle Christmas tree ornament. If you're looking for a particularly delicious looking glass pickle ornament you can pick one up on St. Louis at the Catholic Supply of St. Louis Shop, order one out of their catalog or by purchasing at their online shop. If you don't want to support the Catholics you can always by it through Amazon.

Happy decorating and may all your Christmas's be bizarre!

  • Some Christmas trees hang upside down
  • Germans put pickles on their Christmas trees
  • Some people put toasters on their trees.
The tradition of putting a pickle on a Christmas tree is a very old Christmas tradition.

Thanks for such a fun and well-written article. Here's one more of the bizarre--I put up our tree the other day, but didn't yet get around to the ornaments. My two boys (ages 2 & 5) took it upon themselves to adorn the tree with their collection of rubber snakes! Fa-la-la-la-AHHHHH!

I'll have to check out that upside down tree. I like the lure idea as a gag gift for my hubby. The beer lights, we have some.

Great article! I went ornament shopping this past weekend and found some very odd ornaments such as a pig with wings!

My husband was born in Germany and yes we have the pickle. I am sure it is an endearing tradition for some but my kids want it hung in the back so no one will see it. I actually like the fishing lure idea!

Okay, I think my sister in law would actually like the fishing one. I know my 15 y.o. son would.

Oh My, I need some dirty mistletoe! I will put it up for the party and take it down before my toddler gets up. Like a 3 year old would understand it anyway!
