Penn, one of the best boxers in MMA and one of its best BJJ practitioners as well, will take on Condit, one of the most devastating finishers in all of the UFC.
The welterweight stalwart and title contender Condit is coming off of a flying knee and punches TKO victory over Dong Hyun Kim while Penn last fought to a draw against Jon Fitch. Penn was scheduled to fight Fitch again but injuries derailed the card; now Penn is back on against perhaps a more well-rounded opponent.
The physical strength of Condit might not be as intimidating as Fitch was, however, for the usual lightweight Penn. Penn will probably be content to stand and trade with Condit in this one and that's what makes this fight so potentially exciting.
The UFC 137 crowd in this one will probably enjoy themselves a lot as it's expected that Condit will try to impose his will on Penn and go for another quick finish.
Condit has excellent all-around striking skills and is very creative as we saw in his last fight. On the ground, Penn has a definite edge going into this one but we haven't seen Penn grapple a whole lot.
He's usually content to stick with his excellent boxing skills, trying to get his timing down and picking his spots when it comes to bigger shots. He also likes throwing knees; standing, flying you name it. If either fighter can land a big one that could turn the tide in this fight.
In the end, however, expect Condit to his his superior size and energy to catch Penn with a big shot in a scramble. He may not be able to put the hard-headed Penn out for good but one big flurry late will likely be enough to secure a decision win for "The Natural Born Killer" over Penn in this one.
