Human Behavior- As Bjork's first solo single, Human Behavior became a smash and laid the groundwork of what would become her patented sound. Lyrically the song comes from an outsider viewing humans and thus our behavior which can seem foreign and odd if one chooses to truly analyze. A booming drum mixed with the tap-tapping of a snare drum is the most notable sound. Her overlapping vocals at the end both as main singer and her own backup singer is a nice touch. The song is the first in what would become a trilogy of songs to follow with Isobel and Bachelorette.
Unravel- A sweetly slow offering from Homogenic, Unravel uses awkwardly slow strings and a nonsensical use of noises from Bjork to begin the song. The lyrics speak of loss "When you are away, my heart comes undone." An introspective on memory, loss and metaphor on yarn and heart.
Bachelorette- An almost operatic song that can easily be imagined on any opera or Broadway stage. A full orchestra holds true to Homogenic's beats and emotionally charged string arrangements. The lyrics couple with the music video to create a story that is in fact performed on a stage in front of an audience. The emphasis on vocals to offer a sound of live microphone usage gives the listener ah easily imagined in person, up close experience. The theatrics of the song are unmatched, and have to be heard to be believed.
All Is Full Of Love- Specifically the remix used in the critically acclaimed music video by director Chris Cunningham and most remembered for the sexually charged intimate nature between two white robots. This song is spectacularly beautiful and has the sweetly almost girlish naïve nature of Bjork's vocals, contrasted later in the song with the heartfelt emotion punch to the gut of her passion mixed with strings. "You'll be given love."
Army Of Me- The first single from Post, Army Of Me is gritty and industrial sounding, with slightly synthesized vocals and metal clashing background sounds. Stop complaining, no doubt focused at American complainers, is what Bjork calls, otherwise to meet an army...of her.
Hyper-Ballad- Desiring to see things smash as your throw them, but quietly and kindly sung is how the song kicks off. Utilizing a synth-tinged background and slow vocals, the song quickly intensifies in a electronic dance raving. How would it sound if you threw yourself off the same cliff? "I go through all this, before you wake up, so I can feel happier, to be safe." A smartly accelerated song to fall in the unique Bjork catalog.
It's Oh So Quiet- Often a fan favorite, It's Oh So Quiet again returns to Bjork's apparent fondness for theatrics and perhaps old school musicals? Big band accompaniment and lyrics out of any given Broadway show, Quiet, mixes slamming excitement with sleepy quietness.
Possibly Maybe- One time soundtrack for VH1's 'Insomniac Music Theater' Possibly Maybe is an ethereal and surreal journey through a dreamlike state. The musical choices had and have not ever been heard, Bjork's choices are her own, perfectly unique. Indecisiveness run amuck "Possibly Maybe, Probably not, Probably Maybe?" A dark hope for potentiality of love, soft beats, "Where's the love you promised me?"
I Miss You- An ethnic beat sound dance song with lyrics of any love searching, missing or stalking fan. I Miss You mixes whistles, drums, electronic beats to create a background to enhance Bjork's deep, stomach and throat forcing calls. Brass big band returns in this ahead of it's time throwback.
I've Seen It All- Nominated for a Best Song Academy Award for Bjork's film "Dancer in the Dark," I've Seen It All is performed with Thom Yorke on her album, and with actor Peter Stormare in the film. The song is a choice to leave this world, as there is nothing left to see. Samplings of trains passing on tracks provides the backing. Piano, strings and woodwinds all are used to create drama, and sad emotion.
Pagan Poetry- Mystique, sexuality and curiosity are the sounds of this masterpiece. This song, as well as many of her others offers genuine theatrics and dramatics, this song oozes passion, anger, sadness, sex, mystery and happiness. A song that can never be matched with word descriptors as you could do for yourself in listening. "I love him, I love him, I love him, I love him. She loves him, She loves him. She loves him." You'll love her.
