Black Cats
Black cats have often been the focus of superstitions. In some cultures, the black cat is thought to be an evil spirit in an animal form. They have been associated as bad luck and familiars to witches. In the witch trials, the witch's cat was often sacrificed along with the witch herself.
White Cats
While black cats are associated with evil, the pure white cat has also grown in popularity during the season for the opposite reason. White cats are considered pure and virginal and are almost as popular as the black cat during Halloween. However, any cat, no matter its color is in danger during the month of October.
Halloween Cats
The month of October is especially dangerous for cats. Usually normal people think it is okay to adopt a pet to decorate their house or be a part of their costume. The person is not really interested in the cat as a long term companion. As soon as Halloween is over, so is the desire to own a cat. The black cat is dumped or returned to the animal shelter.
Cat Thefts
Reports of theft of cats also rise during the month of October. People may not be able to adopt a cat for part of their costume or to use in an animal sacrifice, so they resort to stealing pets from loving homes. The disappearance of black cats, white cats and cats in general begins to rise during as early as August and in some areas, as many as thirty cats have been reported missing in some areas during the time from August through October. It is essential that you protect your pets during this time by keeping them indoors unless you are home to watch them.
Dogs in Danger
While black cats and white cats are the most vulnerable for sacrifice, dogs can also be targeted for animal sacrifices. The most popular breeds of dogs that are vulnerable include Rottweiler, Dobermans and Great Danes.
Sacrifices and mutilations are thought to be carried out by troubled teens and juveniles rather than any religious group. Experts point out that Wiccans, a religion most often associated with witches, hold animals in a higher regard than people and would not abuse a defenseless animal.
Animal abductions can occur at any time of the year, not just during Halloween and October. Keep your pets safe. You never know when someone will be out to steal a cat, black or white, with evil in their heart.
