Black Dynamite Washington D.C. Premier with Director Scott Sanders

Q & a with Director

Eric Jackson
E Street Cinema's hosted the Washington D.C. sold out premier of the film Black Dynamitewith the Director Scott Sanders giving his original voice over for the trailer and answering question from the audience afterwards. I was lucky enough to be on the street team promoting the film and trying to get it to appear in D.C.

Black Dynamite (2009) is an incredible blaxploitation film staring Michael Jai White with an all star cast of supporting actors about an ex-CIA agent trying to clean up the streets and avenge his brother's murder. Some would consider it a spoof of the popular films of the 70s such as Dolemite and The Mack. It really is made true to form just as any other blaxploitation film with all the errors, bad dialog, and laugh out loud action. It's a film you should pass up and while still in theaters is also available on DVD.

The line went out the door at the sold out premier and the director was pleased as he entered the theater with some of the cast in tow. Before the movie started he was introduced by the manager and then talked about how excited he was for all of us to be here in his home town and giving him a great welcome home with a sold out show. He had been touring with the film in nearly every major city for the past year and was happy to finally be home. He then gave his unused voice over for the original trailer. He can pull off one of the coming attraction trailers really well. The movie started and during the film you could see him get totally into the action by moving in his seat or mouthing words of dialog.

After the show Sanders accepted questions and comments from the audience. Some audience members simply thanked him for his time and bring the film to DC. My friend Chris asked, "How intentional were the mistakes in the film like the visible boom mic or rolling car?" Scott Sanders replied, "Some we did on purpose because they are in nearly all blaxploitation films, like the visible boom mike or make-up errors, but the rolling car wasn't supposed to happen. The actor just forgot to put the break on and it started to roll away. We decided to keep it rather than reshoot because it looks like we did it on purpose."

Sanders went on to talk about how Black Dynamite is based heavily on The Mack and how whatever problem is going on in the film orphans addicted to drugs, the CIA, etc all happened to the main character as well. So you have orphans in trouble the main character is an orphan. The CIA is involved then the main character was in the CIA, no exceptions.

He thanked us again for coming out and then took his exit. The feeling of the crowd was overwhelmingly positive and if you haven't see it yet please watch Black Dynamite.
