Black Friday and Beyond

Tips for Finding the Best Values

Rebecca Furtado
Before you set your alarm clock to get up early for what you think is the best sales of the season on black Friday; do a little homework. Last year those who procrastinated on Christmas shopping saved a great deal of money because of nervous retailers hoping we would shop our way out of the recession.

This year experts are saying things may be different because retailer have cut back on inventories and planned what is expected now to be another slow holiday session. Retailers want you to shop early and many even offer refunds now if you find the item you brought on sale within thirty days purchase cheaper at another store.

This means you could get a refund on an item you take back into a store even after Christmas. Check the fine print on such price guarantees to make sure your meeting all the guideline. It is hard for experienced consumers to believe that retailers are willing to give you a price break once after Christmas clearance season has started.

If you are shopping mostly online this year you might want to wait till December 17th to make purchases when a large number of sites in addition to offering last minute Christmas deals are offering free shipping. Check out www. freeshippingday.com. Here you will find a list of participating online retailers and ship your gifts for free. Most sites will be able to get your online purchases out well before Christmas eve.

It is also a good idea to sign up for email alerts for certain items you are looking for online sale or certain stores. Even if you do not plan to purchase the item online; many large retailers can keep you up to date on local sales and special discounts. You may be able to find out when hard to find items are in stock and order them online and pick them up at your local store.

If your excited about black Friday don't forget about Cyber Monday on November 30th ;which is the online version of black Friday for those who do their bargain hunting online. Remember that the retailer is offering special prices on usually popular and sometimes hard to find merchandise to get you into the store to do your other holiday shopping as well. These sales have no rain checks and once the deals are gone they are gone. Always have a backup plan if they must have 'gift' is a door buster and you miss out on the opportunity to purchase it.

Sometimes Black Friday is more about the tradition of shopping with friends and relatives who have visited us for Thanksgiving. If your Black Friday is more about a girl's day out than bargain hunting use the time to find practical holiday items. If you have not already decorated for the upcoming Christmas season, this is a great time for significant discounts on decorations and wrap.
