Black Friday Shopping Tips

Jennifer Wagner
Black Friday is a common term used to describe the Friday after Thanksgiving Day sales. Before you begin your Black Friday shopping, read over these Black Friday shopping tips. Black Friday represents the official 'kick off' to holiday shopping, and is one of the best days of the year to find deep discounts, outrageous sales, and other money-saving offers. In this piece, we will discuss a few Black Friday shopping tips that will help you get the most from your Black Friday shopping.

If you have never shopped on Black Friday, let me take a brief moment to explain exactly how it works. Most retail stores open extremely early on Black Friday, some as early as 2:00 am. Yes, people are awake at 2:00am, and already standing outside the department store doors waiting to rush in to find the deals that wait within. When you shop on Black Friday, you should know these Black Friday shopping tips. Also, you will need to expect to wait in long lines and deal with rude, aggressive shoppers in order to receive the deep discounted merchandise. You also have to expect that the best deals go first, so if you are not at the stores early on Black Friday shopping day, you will miss out on those deals. To survive Black Friday shopping, and come out with actual merchandise in your hands, you must think of it in terms of a sport. Thus, you must have a game plan.

Use these Black Friday shopping tips to strategize and put your plan of action in motion. These Black Friday shopping tips will help you get the most from your Black Friday shopping.

Eat before you go

Even if you are at the stores at 2:00am when they open, you should have something in your stomach before you begin shopping. In all seriousness, Black Friday shopping is NO JOKE! The stores will be packed full of people, pushing and shoving their way into the stores, and you will need your strength. I have witnessed people faint waiting in line, and it's usually because their blood sugar has dropped or they have become overheated.

Dress appropriately

It may be 30 degrees outside, but with the large groups of people that will be in the stores, it can reach 80 degrees in the stores. Thus, it's important to dress appropriately. Dress in layers so that you can be comfortable when waiting to get into the stores, but can then shed those heavy clothes once you get in the store and begin shopping. Remember though, that you may not find a shopping cart, so you may have to lug your extra clothing around with you.

Research Black Friday Sales Ads

This is a VERY IMPORTANT part of your Black Friday shopping tips, so pay attention!

There are two ways to research Black Friday Sales. The first is to purchase your local newspaper on Thanksgiving day. This paper is FILLED with all the hottest Black Friday sales ads and will help you determine which stores you want to hit first on Black Friday shopping day.

The second way to research Black Friday sales is to hit the internet. There are several websites that have already published the Black Friday 2009 sales ads. Visit websites such as www.theBlackFriday.com, and see which Black Friday 2009 sales ads will help you out in your area. Another website that you may want to check out is www.2009blackfridayads.com.

Have a plan

You MUST have a plan before you go out on Black Friday. Use the information you gathered from the Black Friday sales ads, and before you even leave your house, have a game plan as to which store you will visit first. Whichever stores has the merchandise you want the most, visit that retailer first. Visit the stores in order of their importance, or by who has the best deals. Remember that the best Black Friday deals will go fast, sometimes even within the first 15 - 30 minutes, so you will need to act FAST to get those deals.

Make a list

Making a list is really just part of having a plan, but it's taking it one step further. On your list, write down your game plan. Which stores will you visit and in what order? What are you specifically looking for at that store? How many of each item do you want to remember to purchase? (Remember there may be a limit) Is there an item you would settle for if what you want is already gone?

Call in for reinforcements

Black Friday shopping is not only more fun with a friend, but it makes grabbing those great deals much easier. Thus, shopping with a companion is highly recommended as part of your Black Friday shopping tips. Bring in your friends and family for reinforcements for your Black Friday shopping. If there are several deals at one location, you can split up and grab the merchandise you want most.

Avoid impulse shopping

Black Friday is NOT the time to buy unnecessary items. Avoid impulse shopping, as it will cost you valuable shopping time. Make a list and stick with to the best of your ability. Learn more by reading this article, "How To Avoid Impulse Shopping".

Remember, Black Friday can be dangerous. People have been stampeded to death trying to be first in the door. NO AMOUNT OF SAVINGS IS WORTH YOUR LIFE! Even if it means you miss out on a good bargain, don't take chances. Get the most out of your Black Friday shopping, but do it in a safe manner, with these helpful Black Friday shopping tips.

I loved this article but I have given up on Black Friday shopping. Even when it is fun, it is hectic. One Black Friday I went with a friend who was trying to find a sweater for her Dad. We visited 34 stores in six hours and no sweater!

Great advice. I'm so glad I won't be working (in retail) this Black Friday! :)

I will stay home. I am not a big shooper even without the crowds! Good article though!

Good tips! Everyone's got good sale prices all the time lately - so there should be super prices on that day.

Excellent article. Were you looking over my shoulder the last time I participated in Black Friday? I've got it down to a science...and save a bundle! But here is something important to add: watch out for criminals who will attempt to take your goodies from you in the parking lot--or worse, take you and your car full of merchandise. Travel in twos to be safer.

I always get the most form the Black Friday experience. My wife goes shopping and gets me stuff - I love it, and the missus is pretty cool too!

I don't like to join the crowd on this type of sale. It's better to stay home than risking your life.

Seriously? My best plan is to stay the hell home. Works every year!
