Black History Month Activities for Children

Do you wish to educate children with the use of activities about black history month? Activities are not always easy to create for educational purposes. But it isn't impossible. You just need to be creative when creating these activities. These activities need to be related to black history month. What activities will be educational for children to learn about black history month?

Activity #1: Children love to create things with their hands. Collages are a great activity for children. Each child can choose an African American. The collage will be based on the chosen African American. The collage will show case the lives of these people. This activity gives the children the opportunity to use their imagination.

When exploring this activity with children be sure to teach children the safety of glue and scissors. The safety of a child is the most important. Be sure to keep an eye on the children if they intend to use scissors or even glue.

Activity #2: A freedom bell is a simple craft for students to represent the freedom the African Americans were freed from slavery. The teachers can purchase cheap, inexpensive wooden bells. Students can decorate them with their own designs. They can use wood glue, fabric, glitter and other materials.

The bell represents freedom. This activity teaches children the importance of freedom and how slavery ended. Most students do not realize how important freedom is to any of us. Especially the African Americans.

Activity #3: An African American mask is used for ceremonial or social events. These masks help to educate others about their culture. Students can learn so much from creating them. The masks represent both man and animal. The elements of man and animal co-exist with nature.These masks can be created from one gallon jugs. The handle is the perfect feature for the nose. Activity #4: Most or all African Americans wear armlets. These armlets allow students into their culture. This activity is simple to assemble. Construction paper, glitter, glue and gems are all the materials you need. A tip to consider with this activity is to measure the student's arm. Always make the armlet a bit bigger than the arm.

Activity #5: A great activity for children is to color coloring pages related to African Americans. The Internet has several websites to offer teachers to give to their students. You can create your own coloring pages. Photo images can be traced, then copied. As the teacher you can create an inexpensive coloring book full of coloring pages. Most or all students love to color.

Activity #6: A play gives students the opportunity to pretend to be an African American character out of history. The teacher can choose which scene out of history to re in-act. The students can really dress the part as well.

Activity #7: The underground railroad tour is an interesting activity for students. This gives them the opportunity to explore everything about slavery and the underground railroad. The students are given a name or topic. And they must search all they can about them.

Activity #8: An ABC train is taking a letter of the alphabet and finding an African American with the name of that letter. The student will produce an image of the person and a fact about them. The image and fact will be taped to the wall in alphabetical order. This activity helps to teach them things they may not have known before.

The eight activities help teachers educate students about a history that many do not know about. Students will gain much respect for the African American race.
