The first event celebrating Black History Month at Arkansas State University in Jonesboro will take place on Wednesday, February 10, 2010 if weather permits. The documentary Good Hair will be presented and discussed. Good Hair explores African-American hair styles and was somewhat controversial so it should be very interesting. This production will begin at 6:00 pm in the Student Union Mockingbird Room.
The second event celebrating Black History Month at ASU in Jonesboro, Arkansas is hosting in honor of Black History Month is the visitation of a popular African-American poet. World renowned poet Nikki Giovanni , winner of the 1998 NAACP Image Award for Literature, will hold a special presentation on Thursday, February 11, 2010 in the Reng Student Services Center at the Student Union's Centennial Ballroom. The lecture is free. Giovanni's lecture begins at 7:00 pm and is open to the public.
A "Tunnel of Oppression" will be held at Arkansas State University in Jonesboro on Wednesday, February 17, 2010 at 7 pm in the Student Union Centennial Ballroom. This program is designed to show what oppression and the effects of oppression have had in community and society. I personally look forward to this event and hope the weather permits it.
Safisha Hill, an educator from Dallas, will also present a lecture during Black History Month at Arkansas State University in Jonesboro on Tuesday, February 23, 2010 at the Student Union Centennial Ballroom. The title of the lecture is "Stepping Back into Time," and it will begin at 7:00 pm.
The "All-Black Affair" will conclude Black History Month celebrations at ASU in Jonesboro, Arkansas. This event will be held at the Fowler Center on Friday, February 26, 2010. The "All -Black Affair" begins at 7:00 pm. The event is open to students and faculty exclusively.
February 2010 has thus far been uncooperative as far as the weather is concerned. Cancellations for these events can be found at www.kait8.com in the case of snow, ice, or some other form of severe weather.
