Black History Month Events in Albuquerque, New Mexico

Esper_D
Every year in February we take the time to remember how African Americans have shaped and influenced our country. We honor our ancestors and the history of our fellow citizens of African American decent. While it should be required to implement curriculum and celebrations of African American history throughout the entire year, it is still important to pause and reflect this history and honor it every February. Albuquerque has a few events lined up to celebrate this special day.

Ain't Misbehavin'

Treat yourself to a theatrical play at the UNM Popejoy Theater this February. The course of this show runs from February 13th- February 15th with showing at both 2:00 pm and 8:00 pm. The show is a tribute to the Black musicians that were a part of the Harlem Renaissance. The play began in New York in the 1970's and now Albuquerque has the honor of celebrating this history during Black History Month in our very own town. Tickets from from $38 to $58, however there is a discount for UNM students to purchase a Popejoy annual membership. Be ready to experience an exciting array of talent, singing, dancing, and acting.

UNM Africana Studies Brunch with Civil Rights Leader

The Africana Studies program at the University of New Mexico will initiate Black History Month on January 31st. They will be having a brunch with civil rights activist and Obama supporter, Dick Gregory. He will be speaking on the journey from the Civil Rights Activism to the election of our first Black president, Barack Obama. Don't miss this opportunity to meet a great leader who has helped shape our country by fighting for equal rights. The brunch is open to the public, however, you do need to purchase a ticket ahead of time at http://www.unmtickets.com. This event runs from 11am-1pm.

Schools:

Almost every school in Albuquerque has their own celbrations to honor Black History Month from Albuquerque High to Lowell Elementary or even Sandia Prep. If you are a parent, be sure to ask the school or your child's teacher for more information on specific events that are occuring to celebrate Black History Month.
