Black History Month Events in Vermont

February is Black History Month and there are a variety of fun activities for you to do in the Vermont area. These activities are a great opportunity for you to expand your knowledge on Black History and take in some interesting local attractions.

The Burlington Community College Gallery will be hosting an informative display by Roz Payne, activist/filmmaker/photographer. There will be a display featuring her collection of photos, films, videos, newspapers, posters and artifacts on the Black Panther Party and the 1960s. This display will be available January 19, 2010 to February 11, 2010. A special presentation and lecture will be offered February 10, 2010 from 6:15pm to 8:00pm. A reception will follow from 8:00pm to 9:00pm. The display and reception will be held at the Burlington Community College Gallery, 95 North Avenue in Burlington Vermont. Black History Month Tours will be offered in Wethersfield, Vermont now through February 28, 2010. The Webb House will be holding tours to allow people to see where the slaves slept and a 1770s kitchen where slaves worked and visited. The Black History Month tours will be held at the Webb-Deane-Stevens Museum, 211 Main Street in Wethersfield, Vermont. The TW Wood Gallery is offering A Celebration of African Americans in Vermont History that will feature historical readings, a painting exhibit and songs from the period. The celebration will be held in the TW Wood Gallery in Montpelier, Vermont. A reception will be held at intermission and will feature a display of paintings by Thomas Waterman Wood. Traditional spirituals and Civil War songs will be sung by Counterpoint. The TW Wood Gallery is located on the Campus of the Vermont College of Fine Arts. If you're looking for something to do with a younger child, Barnes and Noble in South Burlington, Vermont is holding a Black History Month storytime where they will read Change Has Come: An Artist Celebrates Our American Spirit by Kadir Nelson.
