A group of twenty students went out for a picnic to a mountainous forest area 70 kms from the nearest city. They walked along a narrow two feet track where no means of transport are possible. On the way after covering eight kms they saw beautiful waterfalls. Enchanted by the bewitching beauty of the falls, surroundings they took bath and refreshed themselves. Later they proceeded further covering another 12 kms on foot. On top of the hill with dense forests they enjoyed themselves and rested for a while. In the afternoon their descent started. It was getting dark and they had to reach the starting point before night fall.
While returning suddenly they were confronted by a herd of wild elephants. These pachyderms were moving along the path crossing it at some places. The trekking party had to slow down their pace All along they found the elephants harmless. They enjoyed seeing them at close proximity. Suddenly they found the elephants charging them. They ran for their lives. In that process they climbed up a hill which was not easily accessible to the elephants. But two boys lost their balance, tumbled and fell down .Seeing the elephants chasing them they lost their nerves and became panicky. They could not even shout.
They were trampled by the elephants and died on the spot. The others were rescued by forest officials after some time. Soon after night fall they reached the base camp. Most of them were speechless. Some often cursed their foolishness. Some others did postmortem on their adventure. When this incident was later reported people reacted differently. Here are some reactions
Person A: This is a case of triumph and tragedy. A source of enjoyment soon became a source of sorrow. Tragedy followed triumph.
Person B: These boys were thoughtless. They did not take precautions to save their lives. They did not evaluate the risks in their adventure/.
Person C; These boys purchased misery.
Person D: They fit in with the definition of tourists as stated by a great person. "Tourists are those who purchase misery"
Person E: The boys deserve appreciating for their adventurous spirit. Even though two of them died, they helped others to escape by diverting the attention of elephants.
Person F: We must persuade the government to grant substantial financial aid to those who were killed.
Person G: But the government official says there is no provision in the budget for compensation in case of reckless adventures.
