Black Reality TV Shows with Positive Women

Stephanie Modkins
Omarosa and NeNe are two Reality TV stars that gave black women across America a bad name. They reinforced the stereotypes many racists have about the eye rolling, finger snapping, and feisty black woman who has to be in charge of everyone. Fortunately, new reality TV shows airing in their first or second season debunk this view. They feature black women who are more sensible and represent the different sides of being a woman.

Toni from WE TV's "Braxton Family Values"

If you were a diva who wowed the world with music, how down to earth would you be? Toni Braxton shows us on her new reality TV show that fame doesn't equal ego. She is the anti-star. Toni doesn't run to the clubs, boss a staff of workers around (only one sister) or flaunt her money. She is an example of a real woman with fame who has remained humble despite being known across the world.

Rebecca from BET's "The Family Crews"

Rebecca is a central force on this black reality TV show. Her positive spirit stems from a deep belief in god that she emanates to the world. Although she's married to a celebrity (Terry Crews), she makes sure that her family stays grounded in core, Christian values. What's great about Rebecca is that she models for all women how to balance the challenges of motherhood in a way that helps the children win. Watch this show and you will see baby blessings, purity balls and adult children who plan for college.

Lolita from VH1's "Beverly Hills Fabulous"

"Lo" is the wild card on this list. She has a sassy mouth and ghetto fab personality - suited for a hairdresser - that keeps her customers coming back for hair styling. What makes her positive? Lolita doesn't let her plus size make her frumpy, dumpy and grumpy. She says she's sexy and dresses the part. Lolita shows women of all hues how you should love yourself regardless of how big or small your thighs are.

Meredith from WE TV'˜s "Sinbad: It's Just Family"

Want to see an educated black woman who speaks well and acts like she was well bred? Enter Meredith. Who knew comedian Sinbad could marry so well. Wife Meredith always keeps her cool, even when upset, and articulates whatever she has to say with style. She's a lover not a fighter and shows what "balance" is in the face of life. If you want to see a woman on a reality TV show that isn'˜t "spazzing" out to entertain viewers, watch this show.

Lisa from TV One'˜s "Lisa Raye: The Real McCoy"

Throughout the years, Lisa Raye has gotten a bad rap because of her sexy roles. Moviegoers can't seem to get over her role as Diamond in "Player's Club". Well, don't believe the hype! On her reality show, this fashionista is more concerned with raising her daughter and building an empire than taking off her clothes for a crowd. Although she yearns for a mate, Lisa still shows single women everywhere that you can find success without a man. You can be fabulous regardless of a ring (or in pursuit of one) and build up your character and bank account at the same time.

Watch these reality TV shows and see black women in different situations common to most females. They are facing the ups and down of life without reiterating all of the stereotypes about their race. Catch these shows before the season is up or view them On Demand in preparation for their renewals.
