Black Sailfin Molly: Pure Black Brackish Fish

Shannon Frye
For those of you who don't know what brackish waters are, it's a combination of freshwater and saltwater. You take a basic freshwater set up and add a little bit of salt to the water. Most people don't realize that there are freshwater, saltwater and brackish fish. There aren't as many brackish fish as there are freshwater fish but there are enough to fill up a fish tank. One brackish fish is known as the Black Sailfin Molly. I didn't realize this until I decided to switch from Fancy Guppies to Mollies. I didn't realize that Mollies are brackish fish until that point.

The Black Sailfin Molly is completely black in color and it looks like other Mollies except for the fact that is has a very long top fin. The fin is very tick and very long. It gives the fish a unique appearance. This fish stays quite small at around 3 inches in length. This means that you can place one of these fish in a 5 gallon tank but if you want more than one fish you will need to purchase a larger fish tank. You generally want to keep one inch of fish per gallon of water. If you have 3 fish which get to be 3 inches in length you will need at least a 10 gallon aquarium.

With this fish you need to keep the temperature at between 70 and 80 degrees. You will need to purchase a heater to place in the tank. This is to keep the water from getting too cool. You will also want to make sure that the water doesn't get over heated. This will happen when you leave your light on for too long. You can purchase a timer which hooks up to your tank and the timer will turn your lights on and off.

The Black Sailfin Molly is pretty inexpensive but not compared to your average Mollies. This fish will cost you somewhere around $10 and it's the most expensive Molly that you can purchase. You can place several of these fish in a tank together without any problems. These fish are great community fish and they will not chase each other around or become territorial or aggressive like some fish will become. This is a great fish to place in a brackish fish tank. If you purchase one from the pet store make sure that they keep them in a brackish tank before purchasing the Molly. Otherwise the Molly will come to you stressed out and probably sick as well.

I keep and breed Sailfin Mollys in a completely fresh water tropical tank. They can be acclimatised to live in tanks with high salinity, but it's not necessary. They are not a TRUE brackish fish, and will tolerate a range of conditions, providing the water is clean.
