Black or White?

Are whites really better than blacks? No I don't think so but young black children growing up seem to think that. In A Girl Like Me, director Kiri Davis takes a look into this in her documentary. "I thought that by including this experiment in my film, I would shed new light on how society affects black children today and how little has actually changed."(Davis) Young children seem to think white children are smarter, look better, and subconsciously more superior to them.

Kiri Davis asked the black children which doll looked better and most of them picked the white doll over the black doll. This proved that most of these children have an idea of what they think is attractive or beautiful. They may think that being light skinned with long straight hair is the only definition of beautiful. This is called colorism. "It seems to stem from residual anger from perceived historical discrimination against those with darker skin tones by those lighter skin who were often favored by white people dating back to slavery"(Wikipedia). They have also been affected by the media. Most models or celebrity have that certain look.

In some cases in the black community you are accused of being "white" if you are smart or speak correct English. This plays into the stereotype that black are dumb. This negative image is probably portrayed on different types of media like radio, television and even by their parents. This thought that black aren't that smart probably is burned into their mind which makes them think whites are smarter. When they watch television the see the black crack head but they mostly see intellectual and successful whites. This starts a chain reaction which causes them to think that white people are superior to them.

As a society we really need to teach our kids to love themselves. Loving yourself is a first step In living a great happy, healthy life.
