Black and Yellow Wedding Color Scheme Ideas

Jody Morse
A black and yellow wedding can be beautiful, as long as it is done tastefully. It is important to put careful thought and consideration into this color scheme to prevent it from looking like a bumblebee wedding when you don't want it to. Here are some theme ideas for brides-to-be who are considering using black and yellow for their wedding colors.

Focus Mostly on Black or Yellow

To prevent this color scheme from leading to a tacky wedding, it is ideal to focus mostly on one of the two colors. Decide whether you want your wedding to be mostly black or mostly yellow. It is best to opt for yellow and use black for the small touches, as it is possible to overdo this darker color. Here are some ideas on how to incorporate the second color that you choose into your wedding.

1. Choose a wedding cake design that incorporates both colors.
2. Add a black sash to a yellow bridesmaid dress or a yellow sash to a black bridesmaid dress.
3. Consider a color-trimmed wedding dress with the secondary color.
4. Decorate the reception venue using Chinese paper lanterns or other décor in both colors.
5. Use black ribbon for the wedding bouquets.

Consider Adding a Third Color to the Mix

To ensure that a black and yellow wedding theme is less tacky, it is ideal to add a third color to the scheme. While there are many colors which can look great in combination with these colors, white is the best option. Since white is such a basic color, it will prevent any emphasis from being taken away from a yellow and black color scheme.

There are a number of ways to add white to the mix. For starters, you may want to incorporate white into the wedding cake. Also consider toning down black and yellow Chinese paper lanterns, if you choose to use them, with white. Finally, it is ideal to use white flowers in combination with yellow flowers for the bouquets and centerpieces.

Opt for a Yellow and Black Wedding Theme

A yellow and black wedding may seem less tacky to some if you opt for a theme. If you want to opt for a floral theme, consider daisies or sunflowers. Other wedding themes to consider include damask and butterflies. There is also the option of a bumblebee wedding theme if you are planning to opt for a black and yellow color scheme. In this case, you may want to avoid using white.

When done properly, a yellow and black wedding theme can be tasteful. It simply requires a lot of planning to ensure that you are not overdoing the color scheme. By choosing mostly yellow and adding black for small touches, this wedding color scheme can be an elegant option.

This is a good topic. I once knew a woman who wore a beautiful black wedding dress. It was really tasteful.
