My girls were interested in getting a hamster. My older daughter started researching how to care for a hamster and the different breeds. I had never had a hamster and was apprehensive at first, but decided we could check Craigslist and Freecycle for hamsters. We found a Blackbear Hamster with her cage, food dish and water bottle for free. My older daughter had read that Blackbear Hamsters are the most even tempered and affectionate breed, so we decided to adopt her.
We purchased supplies for her first and found it to be inexpensive. We bought five pounds of food for $5, a bag of aspen bedding for $4, a run-a-round ball for $7, and a wheel for $7. We've had our hamster about two months now and still have two thirds of the bag of food left and half the bag of bedding. I like that the supplies are cheap and they last a long time.
The first night we brought our Blackbear Hamster home, we were able to hold her. She didn't even attempt to bite us. We let her go in her run-around-ball and she loved it. It's hilarious to watch her run around in it and always makes us laugh. We fell in love with her immediately.
My girls love to play with her. Having a hamster hasn't gotten "old" to them. There are plenty of times they'd rather play with her than watch TV or play computer. My younger daughter has even built a "hamster castle" for her using cardboard boxes, hot glue, chop sticks, cardboard tubes and other items. The hamster actually likes it and climbs from floor to floor, goes down the "elevator" and starts climbing again.
You don't need to buy a fancy expensive cage. We have a terrarium which is actually quite large and gives her plenty of room to run around in. You don't need to buy expensive, plastic hamster tubes either. Cardboard tubes work great and our hamster loves them. They also give your hamster something safe to chew on.
My girls love having a hamster for a pet. She is sweet, affectionate and absolutely adorable. She's also the easiest to care for and most inexpensive pet we've ever had. Needless to say I am very happy we chose a Blackbear Hamster as a pet.

Post a CommentI have had my hamster for a week now, and I am going to have to disagree that they are low maintenance. I've had dogs and cats my entire life (I am 28) and this is the most high maintenance pet I have ever had. I love her more than I ever though I would and I believe that she is more than worth the work. But I do not anyone to be misled into thinking that these animals do not need daily (and a couple of times daily when they pee and poop in their toys) care that can be quite time consuming. I have dedicated at least an hour of my time every night in just the spot cleaning of her cage and prepping tiny bits of fresh veggies for her to munch on. And this is no less than she deserves.
