BlackBerry Curve 3G Vs. the BlackBerry Curve 8530

Which Phone is Best for You?

Josh Mason
When it comes to choosing an affordable, entry level BlackBerry, the Curve series is among the most popular. The BlackBerry Curve 8530 and the Curve 3G are very similar phones, but have some differences. Read our pros of each phone, including a comparison of the phones, to help determine which one is best for you.

Pros of the BlackBerry Curve 3G

Battery Life- Both Curves get about 4 to 4.5 hours of talk time battery life, depending on the network (3G vs. EDGE). However, the Curve 3G boasts up to 19 days of standby time, whereas the 8530 only gets about 10.

Appeal- Both phones are very similar when it comes to specifications. However, the Curve 9300 or 3G series, is styled like the previous Curve 8900. The faux chrome outer shell looks a lot better than the hard plastic on the 8530. The Curve 3G looks like more upscale than the 8530, but offers the same features.

Availability- For AT&T and T-Mobile users, the Curve 3G is the choice for you. Although the 8530 is available on numerous carriers, including many prepaid carriers, it is not available for T-Mobile or AT&T.

Pros of the BlackBerry Curve 8530

Camera- One feature that seems overlooked by the Curve 3G is the zoom feature on the camera. The 8530 features a 5X digital zoom, while the Curve 3G only has 2X. When taking pictures on both cameras, the zoom feature is important for capturing the exact picture you want. The 2X digital zoom does not zoom in enough for better shots. I have used both cameras and prefer the 5X zoom.

Availability- One thing I was impressed about was the amount of carriers that carry the Curve 8530. Most impressively was the prepaid cell phone companies that carry the phone. Companies such as Virgin Mobile and Boost Mobile carry the 8530 for a fraction of the monthly price as their contracted competition.

Bottom Line

Both phones are similar and offer a great value when it comes to their tech specs. However, the Curve 3G has a more refined design than the 8530, whereas the 8530 has a better digital zoom. The main factor that should influence you is the carrier that you have, or want to have. As a long-time contract phone customer, I will be switching my service to a prepaid carrier that has the 8530 series. Both phones are easy to use and look great, but vary depending on carrier and looks.
