Black-footed Cat: Exotic Pet Cat Found in Southern Africa

Elisia Yun
The Black-footed cat is a rare and beautiful cat with distinctive markings found in Southern Africa, and one of the smallest exotic cats out there. In fact, the Black-footed Cat is widely recognized and known for being the smallest exotic cat out there. They have great adaptive abilities, and can survive days without water, and survive by obtaining the moisture they need only the prey that they eat.

The Black-Footed Cat is actually even smaller than the average domestic household pet cat. In fact, a fully matured male of this species will only weigh about 5 pounds so you can estimate how large they actually are. Females are much smaller and will weigh only about 3 pounds averagely. Their name comes from the fact that the soles of their feet are black; however, their most distinctive feature is actually their coats which are a tawny-brown color with beautiful markings on them.

The Black-footed cat is a rare species to find, and is usually found in South Africa or Southern Angola. They generally live in the desert regions which is why they have such great adaptive abilities in obtaining the moisture that they need, and surviving off little water. They are also found in brush land. The main threat to their population number is probably deforestation and also pest control.

The studies that have been done on this cat indicate that they develop more quickly than domesticated cats, and other exotic cats; however, it takes a longer time for the young to become independent. They will reach sexual maturity as late as 20 months, and their cubs will become independent when they reach 4 months old. Generally, in a litter, there would be one or three cubs around.

In the wild, the Black-Footed Cats will hunt small rodents like gerbils, and hamsters although they have also been known to feast on small hares, reptiles, insects and birds. Their diet ranges quite a lot as they hunt what is available to them. Sometimes, the Black-Footed Cat will hunt larger prey; in that case, they will have to hide the carcass and come back to the meat later.

Just like any other exotic pets, it is important to do your research and homework before choosing to adopt one. They need a den to hide in, and to be brought to an exotic pet veterinarian. Learning how to train them is also an important factor. They also need places for climbing in a home environment. Lastly, their diet should include a supply of fresh meat although in some cases, it shows that it does not affect the cat too much to be fed commercial food. Zoological vitamins and water is also an essential part of their diet. This species of cat, while small, actually needs quite a lot of room to run around as well!

What is wrong with people? Just because it's "pretty" or "small" means that it makes a pet. These things are, for their size, vicious predators. More importantly, if you want a cat, GET A CAT. There are hundreds of millions that need homes. Don't go upsetting the numbers of one of the last wild-living exotics on the planet for your arrogance.
