Blackwater Falls. Blackwater Falls is located in Davis, WV. The falls are, if not impressive in size, simply beautiful to view. According to the park's website [link], "The "black" water is a result of tannic acid from fallen hemlock and red spruce needles. The falls are one of the most photographed sites in West Virginia." At any rate, it's a great place to visit. It's free to drop in. I have gone many times in the past, especially as a child. There are several viewing locations, each which provide a unique view of the falls and river. These are reached by following woodland paths and steps, so it may not be the best location if you don't enjoy a short walk. The time of year you choose to visit does make a difference. In the hot months of late summer and early fall, there tends to be less water in the river, making the view a little less impressive. This is a great location to illustrate the natural beauty that makes this state what it is.
Seneca Caverns. Seneca Caverns is a beautiful place to visit, especially if you've never been inside a cave before. Touring the cave is inexpensive, with discounts for groups, visiting classes, military members, AAA members, and Senior Citizens. The cavern is located in Riverton, WV. They offer something for everyone, including cave tours (a one hour guided adventure.) The tour through the cave is a well-lit trek that follows a path. During the trip, the lights are turned off when everyone is stopped in a safe location to illustrate the absolute darkness of the underground wonder. There are a lot of great features, which are interesting to study if you're new to caves. The tour provides a lot of history and science. The only suggestion I make is that you wear comfy shoes and bring a jacket or sweater. The cave stays at a consistent temperature year round. It's great if you're going in from a hot day, but after a few minutes it can get chilly.
In addition to the regular cave tours, Seneca Caverns also provides visits to the "Stratosphere Cave." I have never visited, but Seneca Cavern's website explains this as a more demanding trek than the regular cavern tour. "...there is no electricity installed. Guides lead the way for visitors who are outfitted with headlamps. At the "end" of the cave is a dramatic rock formation for which the cave is named, the Stratosphere Balloon." [link]
Gemstone mining is also available. For a small price, visitors can purchase a bag from the gift shop, go outside and use the water sluice to sift for treasures among their dirt and sand. This is an excellent discovery activity for children (and adults!)
There are many wonderful locations to visit in West Virginia. These are just two suggestions based on past experiences. Check them out if you're bored, or go out and find a new favorite!

Post a Commentwonderful suggestions, Blackwater Falls are indeed beautiful!
If money and time allowed I would make it my business to travel more to places such as these. But I can enjoy them through your eyes even if I don't ever get an opportunity to visit there. Good work.
beautiful
I love West Virginia. It is such a beautiful state. These both sound like great places to visit.
