Blackwood Dog Food Review

A Review of Blackwood 5000 Catfish Meal & Potato Dog Food

Amy Wolfe
Blackwood 5000 Catfish Meal & Potato formula is an alternative dog food for dogs with food allergies. Blackwood 5000 has no corn, no wheat, and no soy in its formula. It is a high-quality, super-premium food that includes proteinate minerals, probiotics, and omega 3 & omega 6 fatty acids.

Blackwood Corp. is a small company in Columbia, South Carolina. They are a group of dog professionals, specializing in field trials, performance, and showing dogs. They value quality ingredients, not slick marketing and misleading advertising. Quoting their website, "One of the most important, but often overlooked aspects, is the cooking process of the carbohydrates." The low-temperature cooking process works to "...increase digestibility and lessen the workload on the digestive system, thus lowering the stool volume. This equates to less clean up and reduces the cost of feeding your pets."

I can vouch for that. Other brands we've tried have resulted in a much higher volume of, and messier, cleanup. Less waste means more nutrients are absorbed into the body.

The only thing I'm not so crazy about is the price. But, I understand that higher quality ingredients and a slower cooking process cost more. So, I'm willing to pay more to ensure my dog maintains optimal health. Blackwood is not widely distributed to the grocery and pet store chains, so it may be difficult to find. But, you can order it online or call their toll-free number to find out where you can buy it locally.

What I like about Blackwood is that they use a slow, low temperature cooking process to get the most nutritional value out of the food. Blackwood never uses any artificial colors, chemical preservatives, by-products, fillers or artificial flavors in their pet foods. They don't use soy products or wheat products in any of their formulas. In the Blackwood 5000, there is no corn either.

We've tried many different brands of dog food over the past five years, and this is the best we've found. Among the brands we've tried are Nutro Natural Choice, Natural Balance, Nature's Recipe, Wellness, Innova, California Natural, Evo, Nature's Variety Prairie, and Timberwolf Organics. All of the dog foods we've tried are high-quality feeds. Some are better than others. Some have what I want in the ingredients department, but didn't agree with my dog. Others have changed their formulas and are no longer desirable for me or my dog's health. And others were affected by the widespread dog food recalls. That's what brought me to Blackwood. They were never affected by any of the dog food recalls. Any grains that they use are grown and processed in the U.S.

Overall, I have been very happy with Blackwood 5000 dog food and would recommend it to others, especially those that are dealing with food allergies in their dogs. It has been the most beneficial food for my dog of all the brands that we've tried. I don't work for Blackwood, nor do I have any affiliation with them. I'm just a dog owner who has finally found a dog food company that I trust and believe in. Keep in mind that no one dog food is the best choice for every dog. Some dogs do well on certain brands and not on others. Try a variety of foods and see what works best for your dog.

  • Blackwood was not affected by the dog food recalls.
  • All of Blackwood pet foods have no artificial or chemical preservatives.
  • Blackwood 5000 is specially formulated for dogs with food allergies.
Blackwood 5000 contains no wheat, meat by-products, corn, or soy.

I have to put in my two cents some of you people have no idea what is going on with pet food and companies. You think because a candy company owns nutro that its no good, your wrong. Nutrp has been given full control and does alot of testing before items are shipped. Yes the dog food is heavy in rice products but they have chicken meal, lamb meal, venison and herring as options. I have know peolpe who have fed nutro natural choice for 15 to 20 years with sick pets. Science Diet is good if your dog tolerates corn and soybean meal, some do some don't. My rotties have issues with chicken and turkey based foods also no corn or wheat for my boys but some dogs do well. Eukanuba is a solid food again if your dog does well on chicken corn fish and sorgham. Remember one thing , what works for one may not work for the other. If you really want a good addition to any dog kibble go for the gren trip stomach tissue from cws all natural with probiotice, enzymes pre-digested grasses, etc. Just st

I have been in the pet business for 21 years now and sold all the major brands over the years. Science Diet is owned by Colgate/Palmolive and has lousey ingredients like powdered celluose fiber ( wood pulp ), dried beets ( sugar ), By - Products ( feathers, beaks, bones and feces ) and soybean mill run (filler).
Iams/Eukanuba is owned by Proctor and Gamble and has all of the above and also ground grain sorgum which is useless filler.
Nutro is owned by M&M Mars candy company - that speaks enough for it's quality!
BLackwoods is awesome but the one objection is the "poultry meal" it begins with. That is always and exactly 60% turkey and 40% chicken ( thus the "poultry" ) and is never varied!
I consider it to be the best food available and because of it, my store. Animal Atlanta has been happily selling it for 3 years now.
