Review

Blades of Fury is an iPhone app that attempts to provide the same arcade fighting game experience brought about by Soul Calibur. The game sees the character using some kind of special weapon working to beat the opponent, by either knocking him out of the arena or completely depleting the opponent's health via a combination of physical and magical attacks.

The game comes with great visuals and amazing controls. However, the characters in the story are weak - there is not much difference from one character to another, and the characters can be classified under two categories: the strong but slow type and the fast but weak type.

As for the game play, the in-game attacks are limited. As with the game it was cloned from, there are vertical and horizontal attacks. Throws and magical attacks are also offered. The attacks are imbalanced, with some being too strong and some being too weak. Characters also come with their own blocking systems, which are enabled by default.

The game offers several play modes - story, survival, arcade and practice. Practice mode, as the name suggests, allows players to simply practice fighting using their chosen character. Story mode, on the other hand, pits the chosen character against the other characters, telling the background story of the game. In Arcade mode, the player's aim is to get the highest possible scores and beat the opponent. Survival mode sees the character fight against opponents, with each fight becoming more and more difficult as the level increases.

Game controls are excellent. Players can choose from two options to control movement. Movement can be controlled by the d-pad or the analog stick, whereas the attacks can be controlled through the virtual controls or by simply swiping the screen. The swipes, however, do not register well. Probably the biggest fault in the game is its lack of a save feature.

Pricing

Blades of Fury is available on the iTunes store for $4.99. A free version is also available.

Conclusion

The graphics of Blades of Fury are excellently rendered. Game controls are great, user interface is above average as well. The only thing lacking is its replay value, which, overall, gives the game a rating of 3.5 out of 5.
