The brindled son of Craigie Whistler and Rayvan, born in February of 2006, weighs in at 71 pounds, considerably less than either Johnson or Gordon or any of the other NASCAR drivers that compete down in Daytona Beach at the 500, their Super Bowl of car racing every February. Blaze N Ray doesn't need a souped-up engine to scoot around the 550 yards that he has owned the past few months, as his 4 legs serve him just fine. Ray broke in on August 12th of 2007 at Daytona Beach after trouncing a pair of official schooling fields and immediately served notice that he would be one to be reckoned with when he won his Maiden by 11 lengths, tying the then-fastest time of the meet, a 30.48 clocking for the 550 sprint.
He decimated his Grade D competition in similar fashion before having to come from off the pace in C, where he managed to win by a single length. Some trouble in Grade B caused him to come in third by 7, but after that the lights really went on for this greyhound and he ran off 10 wins in a row, 9 of them against the Grade As. In several of those he found himself trailing at the first call, only to kick things into high gear and come roaring down the stretch to victory, including one race where he came from seventh to pull out a triumph. A first turn collision on October 12th put an end to his winning ways, but he bounced back the next time out to score a 10 length romp from the 1 hole.
Since that race Blaze N Ray has run 18 times, winning 13 and finishing second in the other 5 times to post. Of his 27 wins to date, only 3 have been run slower than 31 seconds flat, as there is no doubt that he is the fastest greyhound at Daytona Beach. Blaze N Ray has a resume with the following times in it to prove my point: 30.28, 30.35, 30.48, and 30.53! He has won by double-digit lengths in 6 of his races and by at least 4 lengths an amazing 21 instances. He has never been caught from behind as one could imagine and has gained the lead at the first turn on 13 separate occasions, bad luck for sure for those greyhounds trying to catch him.
It's not like Blaze N Ray has been hot-footing it at Daytona Beach Kennel Club versus chopped liver; the oval has many accomplished sprinters to throw against him. RC's Sorceror is one such dog, but Blaze N Ray caught this strong racer in December after spotting him the lead. Starz Simon, Hallo Peso, PTL Lois, and several other Daytona Beach stars have been reduced to mere afterthoughts in the formidable wake of Blaze N Ray, who looks as if he could easily handle more distance and may have a career as a router in his future. Blaze N Ray runs out of the Alabama Kennel at Daytona Beach Kennel Club and is trained by Aaron Barsell. When all the focus in the coming weeks is on the professionals driving their fast cars, don't forget that Blaze N Ray is nearby winning race after race with ease, all on his own volition without a vehicle!
