The person you're to spend the rest of your life with
The person to be there in good times and bad
The person you're to love and forgive even when you're mad
Is there some way, like algebra, to check the outcome
Before you say "I do" and a new life has begun
Is there a tiny voice inside that will confirm yes or no
Some audible indication of whether to stay or to go
I'm sure we could be content with a number of people
But who's the one with whom you're to exchange vows under the steeple
Can you find this assurance in your heart or in your mind
Will you know if it's not right before you run out of time
How do you know if all the irritating things you'll be able to handle
Or if eventually they will be what causes your marriage to dismantle
How do you know where the balance is between selfishness and compromise
How can you be sure it's love and you're not telling yourself lies
Lies to make you believe you're happy so you don't have to be alone
Lies that have you believe it's love and true wisdom you forgo
Could it be after all the time invested you simply want to receive
So you don't feel you've wasted precious years you can never retrieve
If it's the person God intended, shouldn't you just know
And shouldn't there be no thoughts of doubt disrupting the flow
If you've found your "soul mate" should you still wonder inside
If there's someone that's a better fit or something more for you to find
Will there ever be a point where there is no question if they're "the one"
Will the doubting subside after your marriage has begun
Will there always be lingering thoughts of if you did the right thing
Shoulda, woulda, coulda, what do all of these thoughts mean?
Is there something broken if you need some sign or reassurance
To know if it's really a future of happiness and love not merely endurance
If you have questions in your mind should these questions be enough
To tell you something isn't right and you should listen to your gut
Others already married say they don't know how, they just "knew"
Without further elaboration how am I supposed to know too
Maybe it's a feeling of peace instead of this mental unrest
Not this fluttering in my stomach or the tightness in my chest
Some say you may get cold feet or jitters, but they'll eventually go away
How am I to know this distress and turmoil isn't here to stay
I'm in no rush to walk down the isle or jump over the broom
Until I'm more than 100 percent sure I've been found by the right groom
