Blinds vs. Drapes: Which is the Best for Your Windows?

Marki E.
You have remodeled your house. You did all of the work, or had it done. Now you are in the decorating phase. You buy pictures, mirrors, and knick knacks for your home. But, what do you cover the windows with?

There is a great variety of window coverings on the market. But, the choice basically comes down to blinds or drapes. Which one is right for you? Only you can answer that because each home is unique, just as each homeowner has unique wants and needs.

Perhaps you have small children and/or pets. In this instance you may want to utilize technology and buy 'enclosed' blinds. These blinds are built into a vacuum sealed, double paned window. This takes the hassle out of blinds all together. You can use a button system mounted on the wall, a remote control, or even your PC or laptop to control the various settings that these blinds offer. But, price is definitely a factor here as these units cost $89-$180 each, according to Home Depot.

Maybe, you do not have the finances to go with those, but, you also do not have the time to clean exposed blinds.

You will want to go with some of the more economical drapery choices. The cost here can be less, starting at $15-$40 per panel. When you do get the opportunity to clean them, a quick vacuum will do the trick. And, they will still operate if the power goes out.Another consideration is light that may pass through your new window treatment vs. light that you want to pass through. Some people prefer a light, airy look in the room with the windows covered, giving a kind of ethereal look. Others would rather be able to have a total blackout. This, again, is a personal choice.

Maybe there is a certain pattern to the room that you just can not get with blinds. A certain look, or elegance, that you feel only a drapery would match. Perhaps you have found the perfect color, or texture in a drapery.

Then again, you may feel that you require a more professional look of a vertical, wooden blind. There is a large selection here as well. It all depends upon your wants, needs and situation.

As with any decorative touch to your home, these things are totally your choice. Be choosy, take your time, and shop around. This is an investment in your property, so make an informed decision, giving yourself as many options as possible. Have fun with it and express yourself. And, after you have made your purchase, and completed the installation, stand back and admire your new window treatments.
