Blizzard in a Bottle Craft

The weather outside may be frightful--or not, depending upon your location--but you don't have to go outside to enjoy some snow. Make your own blizzard in a bottle for a fun project that will allow you to enjoy the snowy days of winter without having to go outside.

Blizzard in a Bottle Craft: What You'll Need

The first thing you will need for your blizzard in a bottle is, of course, a bottle or some type of jar. I decided to use an old pickle jar but a non-breakable, 20-ounce plastic soda bottle would be a better choice if you are making this craft project with kids.

You will also need glitter and sequins (I used white and silver). I happened to have a few sequins that were shaped like snow flakes so I opted to use a few of those (but not too many!). Other needed items would be hot glue or duct tape to seal the lid on the jar or bottle.

Blizzard in a Bottle Craft: Make It

This is a super easy craft to make and my daughter loved making it with me. We started by filling the jar almost full of water. We filled it just short of the neck to allow an air bubble. Next we added sequins and snowflakes--remember, go easy on these bigger pieces. Next we dumped glitter into the water. We used very fine glitter and with the glitter, there is no minimum or maximum amount. You can use as much or as little as you'd like.

Next we sealed the lid onto the jar. This can be done by running a bead of hot glue around the inside of the lid then quickly putting it into place on the jar or by putting the lid on and using a length of duct tape around the lid. If you opt for duct tape, try to use white or silver, in keeping with the colors of the sequins and glitter (remember--it's gotta look like snow!).

Finally, our blizzard in a bottle was ready to use. This is the same principal as a snow globe, but without the scene on the bottom of the jar. To create the blizzard, simply shake the jar or the bottle in a circular motion and watch the glitter and sequin "snow" do its thing. My daughter enjoyed making this simple craft with me and since all of the items were already on hand, there was no extra expense.

This is a great snow day project and allows you to keep the real snow outside, while enjoying the craft "snow" from the comfort and warmth of your home.

Cute idea! I'm more interested in sunshine in a bottle, though. Can you help with that?

Oh, I'm going to totally make this easy craft! I never even thought of it before, lol. I think I have some tiny fish tank figures that I'll glue down in the bottom of the jar first to make some sort of scene. Great idea, thanks!

I am sure children (some older ones also) will love this. Great project.
