Blockages to Healing: Why You Are Not Getting Well

Factors that Influence Healing

Kate Freer
The factors causing an illness or disease are a whole body problem. The treatment must then be focused on a individual basis taking into consideration the physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual state of that person. All therapies, traditional or alternative, will work successfully for some patients and not work for others. That is the first principal you need to understand. It is so frustrating when you are doing everything to get well and nothing seems to be working. At times you may receive some healing but not complete healing.

Here are some factors that influence your ability to heal.

Age: It is well known that children, the sick and elderly are all first to go in a plague. Children develop their immune system as they grow. They are at risk because of that factor. The elderly often are in the declining years of their life and cannot heal and repair as someone younger. I have to add that with the diet of today, some of the elderly are in better health than their children. That is a sad note on life in 2010.

Heredity: Heredity is one important factor in health and healing. In the old days, people who were always sick were called 'fragile'. They were usually one of the first to die during a severe winter or plague. Now many of those same people are alive because of drugs. That does not mean they are living a life with quality. All of us are born with a genetic program. This genetic program can be enhanced or destroyed by many factors including diet, life style, and our mental and emotional state. Pay attention to your heredity. If you have lung cancer in the family, don't smoke. If you have diabetes in your family history, watch your diet, exercise, weight, sugar and alcohol consumption. In your have heart disease in your family control your diet, stress level and weight. If you do have great genetics, treasure it and take care of it.

Lifestyle Factors: Lack of restful sleep, insufficient exercise, smoking, alcoholism, drugs, obesity, poor quality diet, junk food and fast food all affect health and immune function. You can take herbs but without improving these other life style factors, you will not see the results you want. Herbs and alternative medicine are not a magic bullet. Your body was created with inherent abilities to heal itself. You must give support to the body so it can heal.

Your view on life: Your view on life makes a huge difference in your ability to heal. Those people who adopt a positive view on life usually get well more quickly. Their view on life gives them the ability to change the life style factors needed to heal. It had been shown that HIV patients live longer and are more productive when they keep a positive attitude. Your therapy will work better and more quickly with a positive attitude. When you give in to the death prognosis, your body will stop fighting. I will say there is a time when death needs to be accepted. The problem is knowing at what point your life in this world is at its end. Only the individual knows this deep in their mind and heart.

Immune System Function: Part of our heredity involves the strength of our immune system. Some of us were born with a great immune system and some a poor one. If you get sick or have a disease, you have an immune system problem. Your immune system can be insufficient or be on overdrive. Your immune system when working properly is balanced protecting you against bacteria, virus, and cancer.

Immune system function is affected by all the same things that affect heredity such as diet and life style. Your emotional, mental, and spiritual state have a great impact on your immune function. It is known that immunity is negatively affected by grief, finances, moving, divorce, exams, and other pressures. Often when a spouse dies, the remaining spouse will show up with cancer in the first two years following the death. Their grief impacts their immunity which then leaves them open to disease. You must protect and support your immune system when going through rough times.

Mental Blockages: Mental blockages will prevent a successful therapy from working. Why would you block your healing? Some people just can't release the blockages that prevent them from healing. Their anger, pain, and grief is just so deep that it festers like a dirty wound. Other people subconsciously are getting a benefit from being sick such as extra attention or an excuse for the nightmare their life has become.

The Wrong Program: Each individual must have a program that addresses their unique health problems. There is no one therapy that works for all. There is no magic wand for wellness. Each person with the help of a herbalist, nutritionist, holistic physician, or other professional must dig to find the answer for their ill health. You must be willing to find it, admit it, and be willing to perform the life style or mental changes to correct what is wrong. If one program does not work after a proper trial, then be willing to try a different program or initiate changes in the one you are using. You may be taking the wrong herb, the wrong dosage, the incorrect usage or have not given it a long enough period to do its job. The possibilities and therapies for healing are immense. It is hard to know where to begin. There is an answer to most imbalance and illness. Often the problem is we run out of time or lose hope and never find it. Start with diet, exercise, and other life style issues. Then research all the therapy and treatment options. Seek guidance from professionals and from a higher source. Then proceed forward with a game plan. One step at a time.

The Ability To Accept Our Death: We cannot live forever and even though we can't understand why, we may not get the healing we desire. This inability to heal may result in death. I nearly died several years ago from a clot. I have bad genetics. Even though I watch my diet and use a program to guard against clots, I could die early. When one has and is doing all they can do to preserve their health, you must give things over to a higher source. You must accept with serenity your illness and possible death. You then decide if you are going to focus on your possible death or living life to its fullest. It is not much fun or comforting to focus on death. When you do that you miss the joy, the blessing, the beauty of your life this minute. There are lessons learned during illness as with all of life's challenges. There are people who in accepting their death, lived years longer and with more happiness, than were expected to by the doctors. They at least died with peace. To me each hour and day is a gift which should be cherished.
