Blog Commenting: What Every Marketer Should Know About Posting Comments on Blogs

Discover the Myth Behind Blog Commenting

Angela Chavez
If you have been trying to gain back-links for your blog or website, then you may have learned that one of the best ways to gain high quality back-links for your site is to locate lots of blogs with content that is similar to yours and simply post comments.

What you may not have been told is that most blogs have what is called a no follow tag inside their source code. This basically means that if a site has a no follow tag then you will not be able to obtain back-links to your website. No follow tags are the standard for most blogs. The webmaster or blog owner needs to remove the no follow tags in order for you to be able to gain their blog as a back-link.

Google and the other two big search engines (Yahoo and Bing) originated the don't follow tags as a way to cut back on spam. Times are changing and many bloggers want to encourage back-links from their site to yours as a way to keep the comments coming in. This is good news for you because more and more blogs are becoming do follow blogs.

However, there is another challenge with posting comments to blogs in order to gain traffic. You must be careful to only post relevant and useful information that adds to each post. If the blog author determines that your post is spammy or self serving in any way, then they will most likely delete your post and then you will not receive a back-link for your trouble.

Blog commenting as a marketing strategy can really take alot of your time. First you will need to locate do follow blogs with content that is related to your website and then you will need to make sure that you read each and every blog post so that you can customize your comments. This can take many hours out of your work day and there is no guarantee that it will even work!

Don't even think about using a track back software program that will turbo charge your blog commenting efforts. The search engines and most blog authors know about these programs and will do all they can to discourage their use. You may also receive a penalty from Google or even have your site banned if you all of a sudden show up with 400 back-links to your website.

So does this mean you should never comment on blogs with the intention of gaining back-links for your site? While it can help you in your efforts to move up the search engines and drive traffic to your site, you should definitely not use blog commenting as your main method of building traffic.

One way you can find do follow blogs is to look for the or an image that says "You comment - we follow" Most blogs that allow you to post for back-links will let you know somewhere on their page that they are a do follow site. Another quick way to determine if a blog is a do follow or no follow site, is to view the source page. If the words "Don't follow" is right in front of a link, then you will know they are a don't follow blog and not worth the time to post if your only intention for posting is to receive a back-link.

I personally like the idea better of picking out a few blogs which offers value to their readers and that you would be comfortable associating with. Then decide which ones are do follows and which ones are don't follows. You may even gain a visitor back to your website from a don't follow site , if that visitor clicks on a direct link within your post after finding your content interesting.
