Using humor in a blog when you really want to rant
I learned a trick from the guy at problogger.com who once wrote a love letter to Google for dismissing the Adsense referral program. He started out writing a rant and by the time he was brainstorming he came up with something that I hadn't seen a lot of; he wrote Google a love letter instead and posted it on his blog. The rant was something like a Dear John letter where he stated he stated why he loved them and then why they broke his heart. If you can turn a true rant into a love letter or into something humorous the better off you will be.
Using humor to blog for your audience
Some humor is bad and especially if your audience doesn't get it or if it offends some of your readers. The best way that you will know for sure if humor is appropriate for your blog is by getting to know who your audience is. If you know your audience and interact with them you might be able to tell if they have a bit of humor behind their writing, if they do then it would be okay to use humor on your blog.
Explaining your humor on a blog
Some people are just not going to get it. Explaining your humor on a blog might be necessary. I one read a blog post by someone in the distance blogosphere about SEO. The blog post stated ten ways to do SEO on your blog to create the perfect blog. I was reading through all of the tips and I kept thinking, this isn't right and what is this person trying to do here. Nothing on the blog post would have actually helped the blogger out and it would have made them do a ton of work for nothing except being marked down as a spam blog. I finished reading the blog post and went down to write a comment about why these ideas are ridiculous but for some reason I decided to read the other comments left on the blog and it was then that I realized that it was a joke. It happened to have been posted on April Fools Day but the blog post never stated that it was a joke and I would have never known except for the comments since I read the post in August even though it was written in April. A clue at the bottom of the blog post letting everyone know that it was a joke would have been nice and the blogger even had some leave comments stating that he was wrong and they were unsubscribing.
Is comedy on a blog hard?
I used humor on a blog once and some got it and others didn't. Humor on a blog can be hard to accomplish. Some people like the BareFoot here at Associated Content can write an article on folding towels and make it funny and others don't have what it takes to write humor. Humor is different when you write it down on paper. Actually, everything is different on paper than what it is when you say it out loud and this why it is important to read what you wrote out loud and to ask for a second opinion before hitting the publish button.
Should the title be precise?
The title of a blog should offer some clue as to what you are going to be talking about but if you really want to see some humor pile up on your blog you can write a post similar to the one that WhitePapers.com wrote. WhitePapers.com wrote a post called "Writing Look Like Dead Grass? Fertilizer for Your finger". The post wasn't about anything to do with fertilizer or grass and it was a help post but an assumption made by one of the readers ended with them making a comment that read "I live in San Antonio tx. - we just experienced 14 " of rain . I've been advised I need to fertilizer when its drys - Its for my lawn st.A.- what should use and when. thanks bob" . If you choose to write a post like this you can write a really good post on something that has nothing to do with such things as fertilizers or grass but slap those words in your title and then gather up all your comments to write a second post on why people should really read the entire post or at least the first paragraph before posting a comment. I did this once and there were a lot of comments that were too funny and my readers loved it.
Writing top ten post for a little bit of humor
I love top ten post since they are often easy to read and usually offer tips. I seen one blog that wrote a post on the top ten things to do on the weekend but by the end of the article it was hilarious and had me rolling around on the floor. One way to write a top ten post on your blog and add a bit of humor in it is too write something that has to do with your blog such as top ten ways to wash your car and at the end of it your could write something like if all else fails and your car still doesn't shine take some turtle wax and dip your cat in it and flip your cat over and scrub.
When should humor not be used on a blog?
If a blog is about child care then you don't want to make a joke about pedophiles do you? Jokes should always be clean and friendly. Humor on a blog should be kept on target and still make the post easy for the reader to follow. If the humor pulls away from the post then you shouldn't use humor in it.
How can I use humor on my blog?
Sometimes I use humor in my blog but I often don't play too hard on it. If I am writing a post on writing tips then I might say something like WA: Writers Anonymous and how being addicted to writing could make your sex life better and then I would write a post on how it actually won't make your sex life better but these writing tips are definitely worth reading.
Why should I use humor in my blog?
Humor in a blog can make a reader laugh even though no one is around and it can make for a good blog. There are ways to use humor and ways that humor should not be used. If you want your blog to be a great blog filled with humor than look towards your readers for clues that they are catching on or for clues that the humor isn't working. The readers will always chime in if they feel that the post was funny.
