Why Blogging Lends Itself to Addiction

Lindsey Russell
When you begin your blogging journey, you might be surprised to find yourself addicted. Here are issues and reasons that lie behind blogging addiction. Blogging addiction can be a serious issue.

One major cause of blogging addiction is emotional voyeurism. Some people just have to let it all out for everyone to gossip over. Blogging gives people a relatively safe forum in which to discuss the intimate details of their lives if they so wish. As a result, people become addicted to chronicling every little issue in their lives. In the end, if they are not careful, they may end up hurting those closest to them. Some things should remain private out of respect for others involved.

The above cause of blogging addiction is related to a second: The need to make your voice heard. Other bloggers use their blogs as their personal soapboxes. In fact, a case can be made that blogging is revitalizing democracy. Think about it. Is there really a better way to share your political viewpoints than to share them with the world on-line? Again, some people take this to the extreme. Every little political occurrence on the world stage deserves utmost attention. Much like voyeurs, bloggers believe that their views and experiences are more experiences are more relevant than others. There is a fine line between becoming a blogging addict and routinely sharing your opinion.

Another source of blogging addiction is simple human curiosity. Who's reading the blog? If you use a site meter on your blog, which will provide you detailed information regarding your readers, you might be tempted to obsessively check it once such a service is set up on your blog. In addition, most blogging software includes a system for receiving comments from readers. Bloggers might also be tempted to continuously check the comments in order to chime in on the discussion surrounding their latest post. It can be difficult to resist the urge to constantly check on your expanding reader base.

As if the above examples weren't enough to get someone addicted to blogging, there is the old problem of human curiosity once again. In other words, you might fall into the trap of "So many blogs, so little time." Once you get blogging and have a few comments, you will soon be searching and reading other blogs in order to understand other people's viewpoints and get ideas for posts. You will inevitably come across some great, interesting work. This can be very time consuming and addictive. You might find yourself saying that you'll go to bed after you read just one more blog, only to go to bed hours later. This particular trap can lead to a second which is listed below.

Unlike the last two causes of blogging addiction that were mentioned above, this next one is due to perfectionism. It can be summed up as changes, changes, changes, and too many entry ideas. There are endless possibilities when it comes to blogging. You can spend days researching the latest and greatest blogging gadgets, most of which are free. People can easily become addicted to perpetually improving their blog. He or she may want new links for their blog, a new template, or new controls for comments. That is just the tip of the proverbial iceberg. Closely connected with constant improvement of the blog, some blogging addicts simply end up not being able to shut off the ideas for posts. He or she is continually planning the next great tome for their blog. This person will end up posting multiple times during the day, giving readers way too much to dig through.

There are as many ways to become addicted to blogging as there are to become addicted to the Internet. Many stem from a need to feel as though he or she is doing their absolute best in their attempt to create a funny, intelligent, and insightful blog. In reality, it can be very difficult to gain a substantial readership unless you are determined and dedicated to spending a lot of time with regards to promoting your blog. One of the best ways to gain readership is to become an avid reader of other blogs and spend time commenting on posts you find interesting. Just beware that you might develop a blogging addiction.
