The first thing you want to do with your blog is to keep it tight and focused. Within each niche there are tons of sub niches, this is what you should shoot for as a topic for your blog. Not only eat out less competition this way where you know exactly what your readers are looking for. The other reason for staying focused is that it allows your blog to be found by interested readers who can then become subscribers. Nobody is going to want to return to your blog if your first post is about dog training and your second about shades of lipstick. There are so many blogs available on every different topic that you need to keep your topic tonight and focused in order to let your readers know exactly what you are writing about and allow yourself to become established as an authority on your selected topic.
Now that you've chosen your tightly focused topic the next thing to work on is keywords. Search engines are the number one source of traffic for any blog, in order to get this traffic you need your website to be tied to keywords that an Internet user would be searching for. This means that you need your title and description for your main blog page to be set up for the proper keywords but you're not done here. You also need to look at the permalink structure of your individual blog pages. Instead of having it looks something like "blog.com/112" you want it to look like "blog.com/keyword1-keyword2". This is incredibly easy and WordPress, just change your permalink structure to use your blog post titles instead and then use keywords in the titles.
The final blogging tip for success is to host your own blog. Whether you use WordPress or Blogger, the free hosting options greatly limit your success by reducing the ability to customize the appearance of your blog and also the ability to add a number of different free plug-ins which can greatly help you to stand apart from the masses. Instead of going with the free hosting fork over a couple dollars a month, if you are truly serious about seeing your blogs succeed.
