Picking a topic for your new blog is your first task, and usually the easy part of the blogging world. Almost anything goes: hobbies, work, journals, etc.

Picking a name for the blog is the hard part for most people. It should be catchy and related to your subject. Once you have made a list of blog names from which to choose, Google it to see if the blog name already exists. Some blog names will be taken, simply try another name until you alight upon the right one for you.

Once you have a blogging topic and a name picked out, the rest is all down hill. Or is it? You still need a site, Today.com, Blogspot.com, Blogger.com and many, many more. Type free blogs into Google.com and you will come up with a choice or two hundred.

Do you want paid for blogging? Today.com pays one dollar per day to post and two dollars per thousand qualified page views. Some blogs will allow Adsense (Google), which pays when someone clicks on an add on your blog, though you are not allowed to click on them yourself. Doing so will get you banned for life, so read all the rules very carefully before you sign up. Another quirk of Adsense is your ISP address; anyone in your own home even though they may be on a different computer will also cost you your Adsense account. Logging into your account on a public computer will also cause you to lose it by adding that address to your account and taking the chance that any other users may click on it.

Each blogging community has its own rules as well so read those while you are at it. After all, you really do not want to lose the blog you worked so hard to set up.

Setting up your blog's format is next. Each site is different so you will have to get local directions to set the new free blog up. They offer different layouts, color schemes, page setups and more.

You can customize your new blog any way you like. Adding widgets and blog links to other blogs, banners where allowed, and photos.

Drawing traffic to the blog is next on your agenda. Once you have a weeks worth of blog posts up, start promoting it. Advertise the blog to your friends and family, put it out on one of the social sites for all to see.

Write or post to your new free blog daily if possible. Keeping good content is the key to pulling traffic in to blog readers. If you can not keep up with your blog's content you will lose readers.

You can also take advantage of numerous articles about blogging and your blogs forums for extra help.

Well now you're all set up to blog, all you have to do now is keep up the blog's content stream.

Welcome to the wide open world of blogging, blog early or blog late, simply blog and enjoy yourself doing it.

I wonder how many abandoned blogs there are online. Mine is a bit neglected at the moment, but they are great tools.
