BloodFever - Karen Marie Moning

Bloodfever is the second in Ms. Moning's new line of Fae books and it was released in 2007. Like the first in the series it's well worth the read for those who love paranormal suspense novels.

MacKayla Lane's life went through a complete makeover when she landed on Ireland's shores after her sister was brutally killed. But she'd never expected her investigation to thrust her into the middle of a world she hadn't even dreamed existed. One filled with Fae, dark and light. Both equally dangerous. Her world has been turned upside down. Her blonde hair gone, her gentle ways destroyed, everything in her world has been exposed as a lie, or fantasy.

In her fight to stay alive Mac must find a book, the Sinsar Dubh that holds the blackest magic knowing to fae kind and holds the key to power over both the mortal world and the fae world. Men, fae and more have been searching for the book, ready to die for it, and more importantly, kill for it.

Mac is forced to work with a man she wants to, half the time, smack senseless, and the other half of the time crawl into his mind and find out just what he knows. He's not fully human, but he's not fae either, so she's not entirely sure just what the inscrutable Jericho Barrons' might be. All she truly knows is that he's a man who holds both some of the answers, and has a tendency to lead her into danger without giving her the full heads up on the situation.

Like the first book in this new series, it's written in first person. Normally I find first person hard to get into but Ms. Moning handles this well and it's not off putting once I made myself read the first page. Normally a first person novel doesn't even get put on my too be read shelf without good cause as I really do find them a lot harder to read. However Mac is a fun character and her progression further into the realms of darkness comes across as a natural one. Mac isn't a super power of the month club heroine. She makes mistakes, and she's vulnerable to the effect of members of the Fae such as V'lane who is, quite frankly, sex on legs.

Nicely done, Ms. Moning.
